Chapter Sixteen·The Divine and the Demonic Endowments·Verses 1–24
This chapter sorts human character into two inheritances. Kṛṣṇa first lists the divine endowment, the qualities one is born toward when heading for freedom: fearlessness, purity of heart, steadiness in knowledge and yoga, giving, self-restraint, sacrifice, study, austerity, straightness, non-violence, truth, freedom from anger, renunciation, peace, not slandering, kindness to beings, freedom from greed, gentleness, modesty, steadiness, vigour, forgiveness, fortitude, purity, freedom from malice and from excessive pride. The demonic endowment is short and sharp: hypocrisy, arrogance, conceit, anger, harshness and ignorance. The divine leads to freedom, the demonic to bondage, and Kṛṣṇa at once reassures Arjuna that he was born with the divine. The long middle of the chapter is a portrait of the demonic mind, drawn from the inside. Such people do not know what to do and what to avoid; they have neither purity nor good conduct nor truth. They say the world is unreal, without foundation, without a God, produced by mere lust. Holding this view they become cruel and work for the world's ruin. Filled with endless desire and anxiety that lasts until death, bound by hundreds of hopes, they pile up wealth by wrong means. Their inner voice is given in their own words: this I got today, that wish I will fulfil tomorrow; this wealth is mine and more will be; that enemy I have killed and I will kill others; I am the lord, I enjoy, I am successful, strong and happy; who is equal to me? I will sacrifice, I will give, I will rejoice. Deluded, they fall into foul hell. They perform sacrifices in name only, for show, and hate the Lord who dwells in their own bodies and in others. Such cruel people Kṛṣṇa casts again and again into demonic wombs, and without reaching him they sink lower still. Desire, anger and greed are the three gates of hell, destroyers of the self; one freed from these three gates of darkness does what is truly good and reaches the highest goal. The chapter closes with a rule: one who throws aside the injunctions of scripture and acts on impulse gains neither perfection, nor happiness, nor the highest goal. Scripture is the measure of what to do and what not to do.

Those hateful, cruel, evil people, the lowest of men, I cast again and again, in the rounds of birth, into demonic wombs alone.
Explanation

This is the fruit of their own deeds, which the Lord only dispenses.

Therefore let scripture be your measure in deciding what to do and what not to do. Knowing what the rules of scripture prescribe, you should do your work here.
