Chapter Fifteen·The Yoga of the Supreme Person·Verses 1–20
The short fifteenth chapter gathers the teaching of the Gītā into one picture and one name. It begins with the world as an aśvattha tree, the sacred fig, growing upside down: its root is above, in the Supreme, and its branches spread below. The Vedic hymns are its leaves, the guṇas swell its branches, sense objects are its buds, and its secondary roots reach down into the human world, binding through action. No one here sees its shape, its beginning, its end or what it stands on. Kṛṣṇa says it must be cut down with the strong axe of non-attachment, and then one must seek the state from which no one returns, taking refuge in the first Person from whom this ancient flow of the world came forth. Those free of pride, delusion and clinging, always turned toward the Self, reach that imperishable place, which sun, moon and fire do not light. The individual soul is an eternal portion of the Lord. It draws the mind and senses to itself, carries them from body to body as the wind carries scent from flowers, and through them enjoys the world. The deluded do not see it come, stay or go; those with the eye of knowledge do. Then Kṛṣṇa names his presence in the world: he is the light in the sun, moon and fire; entering the earth he holds up all beings; as the moon he nourishes the plants; as the fire of digestion in living bodies he cooks the four kinds of food; he dwells in every heart, and from him come memory, knowledge and their loss; he is what all the Vedas teach, the maker of Vedānta and its knower. There are two persons in the world, the perishable, which is all beings, and the imperishable, the changeless one. Beyond both is the highest Person, the supreme Self, the unchanging Lord who enters and upholds the three worlds. Because he is beyond the perishable and higher even than the imperishable, he is called Puruṣottama, the Supreme Person. Whoever knows him so knows everything and worships him with his whole being. Kṛṣṇa calls this the most secret teaching; knowing it, one becomes wise and has done all there is to do.

They speak of an undying aśvattha tree with its root above and its branches below. The Vedic hymns are its leaves. One who knows it knows the Veda.
Explanation
The tree is worldly life. Its root is the Supreme, "above" because highest. It is called undying because its flow has had no beginning, though it can be cut. The hymns are its leaves because, like leaves shading a tree, the rites of the Veda keep this life going.

I am seated in the heart of all. From me come memory, knowledge and their loss. I alone am what all the Vedas make known. I am the maker of Vedānta, and I am the knower of the Veda.
Explanation
Dwelling in every heart, the Lord is the source of remembering, knowing and forgetting alike. Some take apohana, "loss", as the removal of doubt and error instead. Some add that memory and knowledge come to the good as the fruit of their deeds, and their loss to others in the same way.

There are two persons in the world, the perishable and the imperishable. The perishable is all beings. The changeless one is called the imperishable.
Explanation
Some take the imperishable here as the Lord's power of māyā, the seed from which the perishable world grows; others take it as the individual soul, or as souls who are free, unchanging while bodies perish. Either way the Supreme Person of the next verse stands above both.

But the highest Person is another, called the supreme Self: the unchanging Lord who enters the three worlds and upholds them.

The tree is worldly life. Its root is the Supreme, "above" because highest. It is called undying because its flow has had no beginning, though it can be cut. The hymns are its leaves because, like leaves shading a tree, the rites of the Veda keep this life going.
