Chapter Fourteen·The Division of the Three Guṇas·Verses 1–27
The last chapter said that spirit is bound through its attachment to the qualities of nature. This chapter explains those qualities, the three guṇas. Kṛṣṇa opens by calling it the highest of all knowledge, which has carried sages to perfection. Great nature is his womb; he places the seed in it, and from this all beings are born, so he is the father of every form. Sattva, rajas and tamas, born of nature, bind the imperishable dweller in the body. Sattva is clear and bright, and binds by attachment to happiness and knowledge. Rajas is passion, born of craving, and binds by attachment to action. Tamas is born of ignorance, deludes all beings, and binds by carelessness, laziness and sleep. The three are always contending, and one rises by pressing down the other two. The signs of each are easy to see: when light and knowledge shine through every gate of the body, sattva is strong; greed, restless activity and craving mean rajas; darkness, inertia, carelessness and confusion mean tamas. Death in each leads to a matching birth: in sattva to the pure worlds of the wise, in rajas among those attached to action, in tamas among the deluded. When the seer sees that only the guṇas act, and knows what is beyond them, he reaches Kṛṣṇa's state and is free from birth, death, age and sorrow. Arjuna asks how such a person can be recognised. Kṛṣṇa describes him: he neither hates light, activity or delusion when they come nor longs for them when they go; he sits like one unconcerned, knowing it is only the guṇas moving; he is the same in pain and pleasure, to a clod, a stone and gold, to the pleasant and unpleasant, to blame and praise, honour and dishonour, friend and foe. The way beyond the guṇas is unwavering devotion, for Kṛṣṇa is the ground of Brahman, of undying immortality, of eternal dharma and of perfect happiness.

Great nature is my womb. In it I place the seed. From that comes the birth of all beings, O Bhārata.
Explanation
"Great Brahman" here means nature, the source of all forms, called great because it is larger than all its products. The seed is the conscious part: the living beings, each with the store of its past actions, placed into nature at the start of each creation.

Sattva, rajas and tamas: these qualities born of nature bind the imperishable embodied one in the body, O mighty-armed one.
Explanation
Sattva is clarity and goodness, rajas passion and restless drive, tamas darkness and inertia. Some hold that the Self is never truly bound and only seems so while it identifies with what the guṇas make; others hold that the bondage is real and is undone by the Lord's grace.

Know that rajas is of the nature of passion, the source of craving and attachment. It binds the embodied one by attachment to action, O son of Kuntī.
Explanation
Craving is thirst for what one lacks; attachment is clinging to what one has. Rajas gives rise to both. Some read the compound the other way, as rajas arising from them; either way the two feed each other.

"Great Brahman" here means nature, the source of all forms, called great because it is larger than all its products. The seed is the conscious part: the living beings, each with the store of its past actions, placed into nature at the start of each creation.
