The Lord tells Pārvatī the most secret mantra of Kātyāyanī, who when pleased gives poetry, matchless lordship and the highest place, the drawing of women, the killing and driving out of enemies and the control of kings. The mantra: the vāgbhava first, namaḥ at the end, the letter on the fire-seat with the last vowel and bindu with nāda, ca with bindu and the fourteenth vowel, and Caṇḍikā in the dative — ten syllables, known as Cintāmaṇi, also thought with māyā at its head; Caṇḍikā the deity, gāyatrī the metre, Kapila the sage; a lakh of japa with a tenth in homa, worship on the pīṭha of the mātṛkā, the limbs with the bīja, then the weapons, the lokapālas and their weapons, and Ḍākinī, Yoginī, Khecarī and Śākinī in the directions. The dhyāna: her right lotus-foot on the lion, her left crushing Mahiṣāsura, gracious, three-eyed, in necklace, anklets, armlets and matted crown, in coloured silk with the crescent, holding sword, shield, thunderbolt, trident, arrow, bow, noose, conch, bell and lotus in her lovely arms, bright as ten million moons, praised by the gods in the sky and the lokapālas. He who thinks of her thus becomes a bull among men, a Rāma among kṣatriyas, an Indra among gods. Thought of in an assembly the mantra makes him seem bright as ten million suns and his opponents flee. Begun on the dark navamī of Āśvina with a thousand daily till the bright navamī, with worship of the sword Vijaya and a midnight bali, the morning march and a thousand japa on the battlefield make enemies' hearts quail and kings flee as from Yama with his messengers. A month of a thousand daily in white, silent, meditating on her white, with three thousand homas of jasmine, bakula and kunda with honey, makes him a lord of speech and a fluent poet; a hundred daily for a year gives even a barren woman a son with Kārttikeya's valour and makes an unloved wife dear. A lakh and ten thousand with homa of blue or red lotus make him a Kubera. Then the fierce dhyāna — clad in tiger-skin, garlanded with skulls, red round terrible eyes, chewing demons with her tongue, Mahākālī like a second Kālarātri shaking the world — with three hundred japa a day for a week in a cremation ground or at a crossroads to destroy enemies, and a bali there of burnt fish and blood-rice with raw meat smeared with turmeric that sends the enemy to Yama within a week, past the protection of Hari or Śaṅkara; the bali-mantra of the twin Umā and Cāmuṇḍā bījas with kāli kāli khādaya khādaya vaśīkuru mahāsattvān and svāhā; and in deer-skin on Tuesday or a forbidden tithi the offering at midnight of blood from a cut with the worshipped sword, which makes the body uncuttable. Finally the eight-syllable vidyā — māyā, ramā, Kātyāyanī in the dative, svāhā — with everything as before.
