Bṛhat Tantrasāra
Kṛṣṇānanda Āgamavāgīśa's sixteenth-century compendium of Śākta ritual from Bengal, distilled from some hundred and seventy tantras — the guru and disciple, initiation, mantra, rosary and puraścaraṇa, the daily worship and the mantras, meditations, hymns, armours and yantras of the deities, and the rites of homa, mudrā and vīra-sādhana. Our own translation, unit by unit.
The Bṛhat Tantrasāra is a handbook of Śākta practice. It gathers rules from many tantras and sets them out in the order a practitioner needs them. Most of it is prose instruction, with short quoted verses as its authority.
The first pariccheda lays the ground. It describes a true guru and a fit disciple, explains why initiation is needed, and shows how a mantra is matched to the person who will use it. It covers the rosary, the seat, japa and puraścaraṇa.
The second and third paricchedas take the deities one by one. For each they give the mantra, its seer and metre, the meditation on the form, and the order of worship. The second opens with the general procedure of worship, which the later chapters build on.
The fourth pariccheda is about worship and the fire rite. Between the fourth and fifth stands a block of hymns and protective armours. The fifth covers offerings, mudrās, yantras and the secret rites. A closing appendix adds further mantras and hymns.
Read it as a manual. Each chapter assumes the ones before it.
बृहत् तन्त्रसार शाक्त साधना की पुस्तिका है। यह अनेक तन्त्रों से नियम इकट्ठे करके उसी क्रम में रखता है जिसमें साधक को उनकी ज़रूरत पड़ती है। इसका अधिकांश भाग गद्य में निर्देश है, और प्रमाण के रूप में छोटे-छोटे श्लोक उद्धृत हैं।
पहला परिच्छेद नींव रखता है। इसमें सच्चे गुरु और योग्य शिष्य के लक्षण हैं, दीक्षा क्यों ज़रूरी है यह बताया गया है, और यह भी कि मन्त्र को उसे जपने वाले से कैसे मिलाया जाता है। माला, आसन, जप और पुरश्चरण भी इसी में हैं।
दूसरा और तीसरा परिच्छेद एक-एक देवता को लेते हैं। हर देवता के लिए मन्त्र, उसके ऋषि और छन्द, रूप का ध्यान और पूजा का क्रम दिया गया है। दूसरा परिच्छेद पूजा की सामान्य विधि से शुरू होता है, जिस पर आगे के अध्याय टिके हैं।
चौथा परिच्छेद पूजा और होम के बारे में है। चौथे और पाँचवें के बीच स्तोत्रों और कवचों का एक खण्ड है। पाँचवाँ परिच्छेद उपचार, मुद्रा, यन्त्र और गुप्त अनुष्ठानों को लेता है। अन्त का परिशिष्ट और मन्त्र और स्तोत्र जोड़ता है।
