After Agastya leaves, Rāma sets up a Śiva-liṅga on the bank of the Godāvarī, takes the initiation, and covers his body with ash. For months he recites the Thousand Names day and night, living on fruit, then leaves, then water, then air, and meditating on Śiva who shares his body with Umā. After four months a great roar rises, like the sea at the end of the world, and a blinding light stands before him. Thinking it is a demon's trick, Rāma shoots every divine weapon he knows, but they melt in the light like hail in the sea, and his bow, quiver and glove burn up. Lakṣmaṇa faints. Rāma shuts his eyes, takes refuge in Śiva, recites the Thousand Names aloud and bows again and again. When the roar and the trembling of the earth stop, a cool light shines. He opens his eyes and sees Śiva seated on a white bull with Ambikā beside him, surrounded by Viṣṇu, Brahmā, the guardians of the directions, sages, serpents, Nandin, Gaṇeśa, Skanda, Bhairava forms, divine musicians and dancers. Overjoyed, Rāma praises him with the Thousand Names and bows to him again and again.
