Chapter Three·Description of the Virajā Initiation·Verses 1–37
Agastya warns Rāma that no wise word reaches a man tormented by desire and anger. Rāvaṇa is strong: his city Laṅkā is hard to take, his son Indrajit and brother Kumbhakarṇa are mighty, and he holds a boon from Śiva. Rāma answers that he is a warrior whose wife has been stolen, and he wants only the means to kill his enemy. Agastya tells him to take refuge in Śiva, since only Śiva's grace can defeat Rāvaṇa, and offers to initiate him by the Virajā rite. He gives the days to begin on, the meditation on Sadāśiva, the burning and re-making of the five elements in order of their measures, and the Pāśupata vow: fasting, bathing, white clothes, the fire offering with the Virajā mantras, and the wearing of sacred ash, which frees a person from the bonds of great sins. Then he gives Rāma the Thousand Names of Śiva and tells him to recite them day and night; pleased, Śiva will give him the great Pāśupata weapon, which can dry the ocean and without which victory over the demons is out of reach.
