The sages ask why Agastya went to Rāma and what Rāma gained. Sūta tells how Rāma, after Rāvaṇa carried off Sītā, was sleepless, wasted by grief and ready to give up his life. Agastya comes and teaches him. The body is made of the five elements and cannot feel; the Self is untouched, full and never born or dead, as the sun is not stained by the faults of eyes. The woman he longs for is also a body of skin and flesh, and the Self in all bodies is one, as space remains whole when a house burns. Neither the killer nor the killed truly kills or dies. Śiva's Māyā, which no one easily knows, makes the world appear, as silver appears in a shell; parts of Śiva, like sparks from a fire, become embodied selves bound to the mind and the six enemies, and take on pleasure and pain. Agastya urges Rāma to know his own nature and put grief down. Rāma agrees that all this is true, but says that fated karma, desire and ego still burn him day and night, and asks for a way to keep his life.

Why did Agastya come to Rāmacandra? And how did he have Rāghava take the Virajā initiation?
Explanation
Rāghava ("of the Raghu line") is Rāma. The Virajā initiation is described in the third chapter.

The sages said: "Then what result did Rāma gain? Please tell us that." Sūta said: "When Sītā, Janaka's daughter, was carried off by Rāvaṇa, Rāghava stayed there lamenting, in the grief of separation."
Explanation
The first line is the sages' words and the rest is Sūta's reply, so the speaker changes inside this verse.

Agastya said: "Śambhu's Māyā is hard to know. By it the world is deluded. Know Māyā as nature, and the Great Lord as the master of Māyā. All this world is filled with what has become his parts."
Explanation
Māyā is the power by which one Self appears as many things. Here it is named as nature (prakṛti), the stuff the world is made of.
