Navratri Sadhana: The Complete Nine-Night Practice Guide
Everything the discourses actually prescribe for the nine nights — when the kalash goes up, which chapter of Saptashati belongs to which tithi, what to do when the akhand jyot goes out, why paran is on Dashami and not Navami, what the Ashtami–Navami sandhi is for, and the rule that decides whether nine days of work survives the tenth.

Nine Nights, Not Nine Days
Almost everything that goes wrong in a Navratri follows from one quiet assumption: that these are nine days with some worship in them. The discourses this guide is compiled from take the opposite line, and take it bluntly — the word is nava-rātri, the charged hours run roughly from 9pm to 1am, and a sadhaka who finishes by seven in the evening and goes to bed has done the observance around its own centre. The instruction given for the specific case that circulates most — that Durga Saptashati must not be read at night — is that whoever teaches it is costing you the practice, and that if the nights were not the point the Devi would have called it nava-dina.
That is the frame. Inside it, the actual vidhi is small and fixed: put up the Kalash in the right window, light a lamp that can burn nine days without being touched, read a defined portion of Durga Saptashati each morning, do that night's Navadurga mantra after dark, close on Ashtami–Navami with Havan and Kanya Pujan, and break the fast on Dashami — not before. Everything else on this page is either a detail of one of those six, a question people get stuck on, or a mistake that quietly voids the whole thing.
One more thing worth saying before the details, because it is the single most repeated instruction across the whole corpus and the one almost nobody follows: pick one sadhana and repeat it every Navratri. Not the most powerful-sounding one — the one you will actually finish, done again and again until it is yours. A sadhaka who runs a different AnushthanaAn extended ritual observance — such as 108 recitations of a scripture — carrying its own strict rules. each Navratri stays a beginner in all of them permanently.
The floor is deliberately low. If you cannot read Sanskrit, cannot fast, and have no vidhi at all, the instruction is to do the Durga Chalisa — by chakra-vidhi if you can, plainly if you cannot — rather than let Navratri go by with nothing. Not doing anything at all in these nine days is treated as a real cost that lands later, not a neutral choice.
02
Do it after dark
Whatever you have chosen — Japa, Chandi Path, a Kavach — move it into the 9pm–1am window. This is the one structural change that separates a Navratri observance from ordinary daily worship, and it costs nothing.
03
Don't stop on the eleventh day
Nine days of accumulated Japa left completely unguarded from Dashami onward is the reason experienced sadhakas fall ill or worse a few days after a good Navratri. From Ekadashi: at least one mala of the same mantra, plus its Kavach, daily. This is the least optional item on the page.
The Nine-Night Map
The householder krama given for sadhakas with no Diksha and a working day: the Saptashati reading is split across the nine tithis by the Mahavidya-krama rather than read whole each morning, and the day's Navdurga mantra is done at night. Kavach, Argala and Kilak are read every single day, before that day's chapters, and Tantrokta Devi Suktam every day after them. In this krama the utkilan and mrityu-sanjivan procedures are not required.

Ghatasthapana: reading the muhurat when Pratipada and Amavasya collide
Day 1
The muhurat question is really a tithi question, and it has two clean cases.
If Pratipada begins and ends on the same day — say Amavasya runs until 8am and there is no Pratipada at all the following morning — do the Ghatasthapana in abhijit muhurat, the midday window, on that day.
If Amavasya holds the whole day and Pratipada arrives the next morning, even for an hour or two after sunrise, that morning is yours: establish the Kalash inside that window, at a shubh Choghadiya. If the window is only ninety minutes and no shubh choghadiya falls inside it, fall back to abhijit muhurat that same morning.
At a Shakti Peeth, a jyotirlinga kshetra or any place where the Devi and Shiva are held to be permanently present, the muhurat calculation is not required at all — the instruction there is that even Diksha needs no nakshatra.
Where Jaware are sown — and the practice is regional; many places skip it in Chaitra Navratri entirely — the order matters. Clean the ground, draw a trikon or shatkon on it, lay pure earth mixed with GangajalWater from the Ganges, used to purify and re-consecrate ritual items exposed to impurity. over that, and sow the barley while reciting whatever Devi mantras you know.
Two practical points that are given as part of the vidhi, not as tips: soak the barley a full day beforehand so it germinates properly, and leave the centre clear of grain so the kalash seats flat and is not pushed off balance as the shoots come up.
Akhand jyot: which side, which oil, how long the wick
Core
The Akhand Jyot is lit immediately after the kalash is established, and its placement is decided by its fuel: a ghee lamp stands to the Devi's right hand, a sesame-oil lamp to her left.
Make the wick long — deliberately, unusually long. The whole point is that you should never have to change it mid-observance, because the moments a nine-day lamp actually dies are the mundane ones: scraping off carbon build-up, or the wick simply running out at 3am on Panchami.
Relight it. The moment you notice, relight it — that is the whole first instruction, and the panic around this is the point being corrected.
Then, at your next sitting, do one mala of yā devī sarvabhūteṣu kṣamā-rūpeṇa saṃsthitā, namas tasyai namas tasyai namas tasyai namo namaḥ as PrayashchittaRitual atonement performed to offset the karmic burden of a weighty act, such as a Shatkarma that results in an enemy's death.. That is the remedy in full. The nine days are not void, the vrat is not broken, and nothing further is owed.
A lapsed daily rite has a prescribed remedy scaled to how long it lapsed — a hundred recitations for a day, a lakh past ten, the initiation again past a month — not a verdict that the whole observance is void.
Said of the sandhyā, not of an akhand jyot, which these chapters never mention. It is cited for the principle the discourses apply when the lamp goes out: there is a proportionate prāyaścitta and you continue, and the panic that the nine days are now wasted has no basis in how the texts handle a break.

Don't lift the vigraha off its asana for nine days
If you have established a kalash and lit an akhand jyot with a Vigreh present, that image does not leave its seat for the nine days. Day one carries the full snan vidhi; from the second day on, it stays put.
For anyone whose daily niyam is to lift the murti and bathe it, the answer is not to abandon the abhishek but to re-engineer it: arrange the seat so the water runs off into a second vessel, ease the cloth away, bathe, dry and dress in place. If you have a guru, this is a question to put to them — the position given here is the one this tradition keeps, offered as such rather than as a universal ruling.
Rakt chandan, rudraksha or sphatik — any of the three works for the night Japa. What is not optional is that the Mala be pran-pratishthit and chetan-yukt before Navratri starts; the Amavasya immediately preceding is named as a good day to do it if you have not.
A mala already received consecrated through a guru or an anushthan needs nothing further — begin japa on it directly.
If you can manage nine distinct bhogs for the nine Navdurga forms, do. If not, the ordinary offering is enough: milk sweets, raisins, chhuhara, and whatever seasonal fruit is available.
The one item singled out as something that should be offered is madhu. Where possible, keep honey in a small silver bowl before the Devi for the full nine days; when the path is complete, mix that honey into water and take it, and give it, as prasad.
The sankalp, and saying out loud what you will actually do
Guru and Ganpati pujan first, then svastivachan, then the SankalpaA formal ritual resolution spoken aloud before an offering or observance, declaring its intent and dedicating its merit. with water, akshat and flowers in hand. If svastivachan is beyond you, take Narayana's name three times, do a Ganpati path, and proceed.
The part that matters and gets skipped: if you are not going to fast all nine days — if you will fast only on the first and last — say that explicitly in the sankalp. A sankalp that overstates what you will do is the thing that later reads as a broken vrat. Use the name you are actually called by; a rashi or nakshatra name is better only if that is already how you take sankalp.
Where you are also seeking Mantra Siddhi, name that too — the resolve is made for the mantra's siddhi and for its full effect at the time it is used, not vaguely for the deity's grace.
The order nobody may skip: Guru, Ganpati, Bhairav — then the Devi
Core
Asked directly whether one can go straight to Devi pujan without Ganpati, the answer is a flat no. The worship is kramagat: Guru, Ganesha, Batuk Bhairava, Hanuman, and then the Devi. Alongside these, Narasimha is named as the fourth of the guardian set to be offered akshat and pushpa.
Where the full vidhan is beyond you, offering akshat and a flower in each of their names is accepted as the pujan. Where even that is trimmed, the irreducible minimum is Ganpati and Bhairav, then the Devi. If you have no guru, meditate on Dattatreya — the Mahaguru, in whom Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh are one — and offer in that name.
Reading Saptashati across nine days instead of whole each day
For working sadhakas
The full thirteen adhyayas every morning is not what is prescribed for a householder with a job. The Mahavidya-krama splits the text across the nine tithis — the exact split is in the table above — and it has one structural advantage beyond time: in this krama the utkilan and the mrityu-sanjivan procedures are not required. That removes the single biggest source of paralysis for an undiksha-ed reader of Durga Saptashati, which is the kilak and what to do about it.
What is required every day, without exception: Kavach, Argala and Kilak before the day's chapters, and Tantrokta Devi Suktam — the yā devī sarvabhūteṣu stuti — after them.
Navarna: what you may do without diksha, and what you may not
Adhikara
The line is drawn precisely, in both directions.
Without Diksha: one mala of Navarna is allowed. In the Mahavidya-krama you may samput the day's chapter with a mala of Navarna before and after; if you are not doing samput, nine repetitions at minimum. Do it without the pranav.
Not without diksha: Navarna as an anushthan in its own right, with count and siddhi in view. That requires shakta diksha and the guru's order, and the vidhi for it is stated outright as something that cannot be given publicly — a refusal repeated to askers rather than a hedge.
Related and often confused: wherever a mantra carries a vaidik pranav, an ordinary sadhaka should voice the tantrik pranav instead. The vaidik pranav is specifically for sannyasis.
Given directly to first-timers: if your Sanskrit is not sound, do not recite badly — read the whole thing in Hindi, with bhav. The objection that Hindi "doesn't work" is answered and dismissed.
But the concession comes attached to a target, not as a permanent settlement. Saptashati is seven hundred shlokas; ten a day is two months and ten days to reach fluent recitation — not memorisation, only pronunciation. Fifteen to thirty minutes a day, and within a few Navratris you are reading the Sanskrit. The Kavach may likewise be read in Hindi.
The night window, and the advice that costs you it
Core
Nine to one. That is the window named for the nine nights, and sadhana done inside it is called ati-uttam. The reasoning offered is not elaborate — it is that this is the Devi's own time, and that the observance is named for the nights.
The counter-teaching is addressed head-on: someone advising that Saptashati is not to be read at night is described as costing the sadhaka, however credentialled they appear. The written prohibition exists; what is objected to is quoting it while never discussing the reason it was written. If you keep that view, the position given is simply that you are free to.
The nightly Navdurga japa — nine mala and nine cloves
After the evening aarti, around 8pm, sit again. The akhand jyot is already burning; light a separate karma-sakshi deepak for the sitting. Offer dhoop, deep and naivedya, then akshat and pushpa in the names of Guru, Ganpati, Batuk Bhairav and Narasimha.
Then nine mala of that night's Navdurga form — Shailputri on Pratipada, and onward through the nine — and offer the japa to the Devi. Close by burning nine cloves or nine camphor in a vessel. That is the whole night sitting; it is short by design.
Asked whether Ratri Suktam and Jayanti Mangala Kali can be done together, the answer is no: pick one. The reasoning given is practical rather than doctrinal — both carry prachand shaktis, and running both at once splits the devotion each is owed and leaves you managing what arrives.
Stated as a general rule, not a one-off ruling: doing one mantra's japa at a time is always the better course.
The ladder given for someone with no Diksha and no parampara, one rung per month, so that a year of Navratris and parva-kalas covers the base:
1. Dev-diksha vidhan and the Datta mala mantra purashcharan — this is what connects you to the guru-mandala when you have no living guru, and what gives the sukshma sharir its capacity to hold a mantra at all. 2. Ganpati — Sankatnashan Ganesh Stotra, 1100 or 2100 or 11000 over some months. Without this the muladhara stays unsettled, and the pattern of starting a sadhana and abandoning it is attributed directly to its absence. 3. Batuk Bhairav's stotra and satnaam, for the protection the sadhana itself starts attracting the need for. 4. Then Panchakshari, or the Devi's satnaam and a Kavach — Kubjika, Kamakhya or whichever you keep. 5. Only then the Ekakshari beej.
On the surrounding market: the claim that no mantra may be touched without a guru is named as marketing. Diksha is not being argued against — several long-standing, undiksha-ed sadhakas are cited as having better experience and results than initiated ones. What is objected to is the fascination with the vocabulary, where a "shmashan bhairav" diksha sells instantly and a Hanuman one draws nobody.
The 32-namavali, if you want one thing that needs no permission
Durga's 32 names need no Diksha at all — this is answered unambiguously and repeatedly. For Navratri specifically, the progression given is: a plain 1100 paath the first time; once that is comfortable, move to the chakra-vidhi.
By chakra-vidhi one chakra is roughly 33 paath. Do three chakras minimum, five if you can, or nine across morning and evening. Where flowers are used, either 33 flowers per chakra, or 33 paath on a single flower — both are accepted, more is better. A single clove per repetition, not a pair, since this is the Devi's alone.
Fast to your body's actual capacity: fruit and fruit juice, as much liquid as you can take, so the body's own organs get a rest and the toxicity clears with them. If that is genuinely beyond you, one meal a day of kuttu-atta roti or similar is accepted — enough to keep moving, no more.
Two failure modes are named. A person in good physical condition eating full meals through Navratri is told plainly that this is not appropriate. And gorging on fruit — eating to fullness and past it, because fruit is technically permitted — is stated to make the vrat meaningless outright. The vrat is a renunciation of taste before it is a renunciation of grain.
The japa-observance itself prescribes eating once, in moderation, in silence and with the senses restrained — the fast is part of the practice, not a separate piety bolted onto it.

He should always serve his own king and his parents. Even a thousand repetitions make him pure. Otherwise he stays in debt.
Asked directly whether one can keep a ghat and an akhand jyot without fasting, the answer is no — their seva requires at least some upvas, and half-doing it is refused rather than accommodated. The instruction is to ask the Devi for the capacity to fast and serve properly, not to run the installation without the observance behind it.
The alternative offered is not a lesser grace but a different shape: drop the ghat, keep the worship. Do a full morning and evening pujan, do it lavishly, do the shringar. That is explicitly said to carry the Devi's kripa too. A daily Chandi Path with panchopachar pujan, a karma-sakshi deepak and a satvik bali, with no ghatasthapana at all, is confirmed as entirely fine. And nine days of fasting with no ghat established is likewise fine.
If the body is up to it, sleep on the ground: kusha matting, or a blanket, or a blanket folded thick. Not on a khaat, not on a palang — that is the rule as given, and bhumi-shayan is called the best of the options.
The exemption is real and freely given. Where there is genuinely no floor space, or family circumstances make it impossible, sleeping raised is not a fault — ask the Devi's forgiveness and do it. This is treated as a body-and-circumstance rule, not a test.
BrahmacharyaStrict celibacy required through an extended ritual observance. through the nine days, physical and mental both — stated as a rule for anyone running an anushthan and as a request even to those doing nothing at all. The framing for the second group is minimal and specific: even if you are not observing Navratri, keep two things — don't eat carelessly, and keep brahmacharya.
What is unusual here is where it ends, which is not on Dashami. See the after-Navratri card below.
Travelling mid-Navratri, or only having three days
Asked by someone who has to travel mid-Navratri whether she can do the pujan for the first three or five days only, the answer is a simple yes.
The same principle covers relocation: a sadhaka who used to do the full anushthan with an akhand jyot and a mandal at a temple beside his old home, and can no longer, is told to do as much as is possible and that no dosha attaches. Where the region lacks even flowers and leaves, mental offering completes the pujan.
When means are lacking, a poor man should sacrifice by speech or by act; done with the thought of an offering to the deity, little or much serves.

A thought held out of fear of relatives or of the king is faith too, but a lesser kind. A poor man who has nothing at all should worship with speech or with action.
57

Know that chanting mantras, hymns and the like is worship by speech. Pilgrimage, vows and the like, they say, are worship by the body.
58
By whatever means at all, little or much — what is done with the thought of offering it to the deity brings enjoyment.
For a sadhaka whose body will not cooperate — age, illness — the reduced form given is concrete rather than vague: keep one small vigraha of the Devi, five or six inches, and do its nitya abhishek, shringar and aarti. Shringar pujan is named as the best of them.
That is the whole observance in that case, and it is offered as sufficient, not as a consolation.
The commonly stated prohibition is on sweeping at night. The correction offered is finer: what must not happen is rubbish crossing the threshold after dark — out the main gate. Sweeping and cleaning inside the house is fine.
A stricter version — not touching the broom at all after evening — is acknowledged as a rule kept in many places, and it is not disputed. The point is that the version that matters is about the threshold.
Sandhi kaal: the twenty minutes either side of Ashtami's end
Peak
The junction where Ashtami ends and Navami begins — the last twenty minutes of Ashtami and the first twenty of Navami — is the single most charged window of the nine nights, and it is charged for a stated reason: this is when Chamunda, called the greatest tantrokta form of the Jagadamba, appeared. Her energy is described as pervading the whole brahmanda in that window, which is why it is the time named for the destruction of enemies, of affliction, of disease.
Related and separate: Maha Ashtami's midnight is its own peak. Where Ashtami's madhya-ratri vyapini falls, that night is not to be left empty — the phalashruti of the Baglamukhi and Lalitamba panchang vidyas single out the sadhaka who reads at midnight in Sharadiya Navratri's Maha Ashtami.
Coconut, lemon, banana — and cucumber, gourd and kushmanda are named as best. The mantrokta vidhan exists and is deep; what is given here is deliberately the simplest workable form, for a sadhaka who knows none of it.
Lay a banana leaf, place the fruit on it, cover the fruit — a red cloth for a banana — and strike once, hard enough that it parts in a single blow. Then apply roli and circle it with water. The shakti of your house will accept it; bali is stated to be dear to the Devi and to please her greatly.
If you can do nothing else: one coconut and three lemons, and burn camphor and cloves. A silver vessel is best for that, a clay, copper or brass one is fine.
The sequencing rule is simple and is the one most often inverted. Havan comes first; Kanya Pujan follows it.
Which day depends on where your path finished. If the Saptashati path completed on Saptami and you will do kanya pujan on Ashtami, then do the havan on Ashtami morning and the kanya pujan after it. If the path completed on Ashtami, both move to Navami — havan in the morning, kanya pujan after.
Guggul and ghee — named as the best combination for a paushtik havan, always. Add panchmeva and madhu and it is better still. The full set given: panchmeva, madhu, black til, guggul and ghee.
One distinction is stated explicitly: men keep the ghee proportion higher, women keep the guggul proportion higher. Offer 108 ahutis with the mantra you have been doing.
The kund should be copper. Not iron, not steel. Khair wood is fine for the fuel — it is one of the nine planetary woods.
Where you have done a Navdurga anushthan, the Navami-morning form given is at least 27 ahutis to each of the nine Durgas from her own mantra.
The dashāṃśa rule — havan a tenth of the japa done, tarpaṇa a tenth of that, mārjana a tenth again — is what closes a Navratri anushthan.
Universally kept, and not stated here. The one chapter in the seeded text that lays out a mantra-anushthan end to end gives fixed oblation counts instead (17.46–47). The dashāṃśa proportion belongs to the tantra and paddhati literature this guide's sources work from, not to this Purāṇa.

The short one is for those on the active path. The long one is for those who have turned away from the world. At the start of the sacred calls and of mantras, use it as you wish, with its sound and parts.
17½
It should also be used at the start of the Veda, and in the prayers at dawn and dusk.
18
By repeating it ninety million times a person becomes fully pure.
19
With another ninety million he gains mastery over earth. With another ninety million he gains mastery over water.
With another ninety million he gains mastery over fire. With another ninety million he gains mastery over air. With ninety million more he gains mastery over space.
21
In the same order, with ninety million each, he masters smell and the other senses. With ninety million more he masters the ego.
22
By repeating the mantra a thousand times daily, a man stays pure every day. Beyond that, twice-born ones, the repetition is for his own perfection.
23
So, after repeating it one thousand and eighty million times, he is awakened by the praṇava and attains pure yoga.
24
Joined with pure yoga, he is free while still living. There is no doubt. He always repeats the mantra and always meditates on Śiva, whose form is the praṇava.
25
Such a great yogi, resting in samādhi, is Śiva himself. There is no doubt. He should place the seer, the metre, the deity and the rest on his body, and then repeat the mantra.
26
Placing the praṇava with the letters of the alphabet on his body, he becomes a seer. He gains the whole fruit of placing the ten mothers, the six paths and the rest.
26½
For those on the active path, and for those who mix both paths, the gross praṇava is prescribed.
27
Śiva's yogis are of three kinds: those given to ritual action, to austerity and to repeating the mantra.
28
One who worships through ritual action, with wealth and other riches, with his hands and other limbs, and with bowing and the like, is called a yogi of ritual action.
29
One who worships, eats little, has mastered the outer senses and harms no one is called a yogi of austerity.
30
One who has all these, is always pure, is free of every desire and the like, is always devoted to repeating the mantra and is calm, is known as a yogi of repetition.
31
A man who worships Śiva's yogis with the sixteen offerings becomes pure. Step by step, from living in Śiva's world onward, he gains liberation.
Now I will tell you about the yoga of repetition. Listen as I speak, twice-born ones. Repetition is prescribed for one who practises austerity. By repeating the mantra he wipes himself clean.
33
Twice-born ones, Śiva's name in the dative, with "namaḥ" before it, holds the five elements. This is Śiva's five-syllabled mantra, the gross form of the praṇava.
34
By repeating the five-syllabled mantra alone, a man gains every perfection. He should always repeat the five syllables with the praṇava joined at the start.
Twice-born ones, having received the teacher's instruction, he should live in a pleasant place on good ground. He should begin in the bright fortnight and go on until the fourteenth of the dark fortnight.
35½
The months of Māgha and Bhādra are special. They are the very best of all times.
36
He should eat a small meal once a day, hold his speech and keep his senses in check.
37
He should always serve his own king and his parents. Even a thousand repetitions make him pure. Otherwise he stays in debt.
He should repeat the five syllables five hundred thousand times, keeping Śiva in mind: seated in the lotus posture, giver of good, bearing the Gaṅgā and the crescent moon,
39
shining with Śakti seated on his left thigh and with his great attendants, the god who holds the deer and the axe, whose hands give boons and fearlessness,
40
ever gracious, Sadāśiva. Keeping him in mind, he should first worship him mentally, in the heart or in the disc of the sun.
Facing east and acting with purity, he should repeat the five-syllabled mantra. On the morning of the fourteenth of the dark fortnight, having finished his daily rites,
He should invite excellent Brahmins devoted to Śiva, together with their wives. He should invite one noble, excellent teacher as the form of Śiva with Ambā,
44
and five excellent twice-born devotees of Śiva as Īśāna, Puruṣa, Aghora, Vāma and Sadyojāta.
45
Gathering the things needed for worship, he should begin Śiva's worship. After doing Śiva's worship as the rule says, he should begin the fire offering.
46
Following his own ritual manual up to the rite of the fire's mouth, he should make the offerings: ten and one, or a hundred and one, or a thousand and one.
When the offerings are done, he should give the fee, and a cow and a bull to the teacher. He should see those Brahmins as Īśāna and the other forms, and the teacher as Śiva with Ambā.
he should bathe his own head with the water that has washed their feet. At once he gains the fruit of bathing in three hundred and sixty million holy places.
50
With devotion he should give them food of ten kinds. He should see the teacher's wife as the highest Goddess, and honour the others in order, beginning with Īśāna,
51
honouring them with rice pudding as fully as his means allow, first with rudrākṣa beads and clothes, and with fried cakes and sweet cakes.
Then he should make the offering of food to the spirits and give a large feast. Then, praying to the lord of gods, he should close the course of repetition.
53
Having done this preparatory rite, a man becomes master of the mantra. With five hundred thousand more, all his sins are destroyed.
Starting from Atala and going up in order to Satyaloka, with each five hundred thousand repetitions he gains the lordship of the next world.
55
If he dies midway, then after enjoying the fruit he is born on earth again and repeats that mantra. With five hundred thousand more he comes near to Brahmā.
There, with the Lakṣmī of the created world, he enjoys great pleasures, protects the worlds and rules. Above that, up to Śuci, lie twenty-eight worlds.
are the four feet of that buffalo, untruth and the rest. It is made whole of them and takes any form it likes. Its glory is disbelief. Bad company is its companion. Its voice is always outside the Veda.
It keeps company with anger, is black in colour and wears the shape of a huge buffalo. Up to this point the great lord is spoken of. Up to this point alone is concealment.
68
Below it is the enjoyment that comes from action. Above it is the enjoyment that comes from knowledge. Below it is the māyā of action. Above it is the māyā of knowledge.
"Mā" is Lakṣmī, the enjoyment of action, and "yā" is what goes to it: so it is called māyā. "Mā" is Lakṣmī, the enjoyment of knowledge, and "yā" is what goes to it: so it is called māyā.
70
Above it the enjoyment is eternal. Below it, they know, all passes away. Below it there is concealment. Above it there is no concealment.
71
Below it is the bondage of the noose. Above it there is no bondage. Below it, those who follow actions done for desire keep going round and round.
71½
The enjoyment of action done without desire is said to be above it.
72
Below it, those given to worship of the bindu keep going round and round.
73
Those who worship the liṅga without desire surely go above it. Those who worship gods other than Śiva keep going round below it.
74
Those devoted to Śiva alone go above it. Below it is the rank of bound souls. Above it is the highest rank.
75
Below it are those caught in worldly life. Those above it are truly free. Those who worship with things of nature keep going round below it.
76
Those who worship with things of the spirit go above it. Below it is the liṅga of Śakti. Above it is the liṅga of Śiva.
77
Below it the liṅga is covered. Above it the liṅga has no form. Below it the liṅga is made. Above it the liṅga is not made.
78
Below it the liṅga is outward. Above it the liṅga is inward. Below it are the worlds of Śakti, a hundred and twelve in number.
79
Below it all is in the form of the bindu. Beyond it all is in the form of nāda. Below it is the world of action. Above it is the world of knowledge.
80
Above it is "namaḥ", the bowing that destroys pride and ego. "Jana" is concealment, and from there a man does not come back: this is the meaning of "jñāna".
81
So the word "jñāna" means that it removes concealment. Those who worship the outer, material form keep going round below it.
The eightfold bond, beginning with nature, is also set firm on that altar. So all that is worldly and all that is Vedic should be understood in this way.
84
Those who live by truth and the other virtues, and those given to Śiva's worship, cross the wheel of time that rides on the buffalo of unrighteousness.
Forgiveness is its horns and calm its ears. It is adorned with the sound of the Veda. Faith is its eyes. The teacher is its breath, and understanding is its mind. Such is the bull.
Liberation is to rest in one's true nature, delighting in one's own Self. One who stands firm in ritual, austerity, repetition, knowledge and meditation,
100
gains the sight of Śiva, and with it the delight of resting in his own Self. As the sun with its own rays takes away what is unclean,
From the knowledge of Śiva one comes to one's own true nature, the delight of the Self. When that delight is complete, a man has done all there is to do.
In the same way, step by step, one gains the state of the mighty Viṣṇu and the others, and then, step by step, the lordship of the state of each great being.
Beyond Nandin's seat, no one knows Śiva's glory. Nandīśvara stays outside and worships with the five syllables.
119
This I received through the line of teachers, and again from Nandīśa. What lies beyond can only be known by one's own experience. Śiva alone makes it felt.
For Brahmins the mantra, as taught by the teacher, ends with "namaḥ". For long life one should repeat the five syllables five hundred thousand times, as the rule says.
With five hundred thousand more he is called a Brahmin by the mantra. A Śūdra too, repeating the mantra that ends with "namaḥ" two and a half million times,
becomes a Brahmin by the mantra, and then, made pure, becomes twice-born. Woman or man, Brahmin or anyone else,
129
one in need should always repeat it, with "namaḥ" at the end or "namaḥ" at the start. For women the teacher should work out the same and show them the order.
At the end of each five hundred thousand, the seeker should, only to please Śiva, perform the great bathing rite and the food offering, and worship the devotees.
Śiva's devotees know all rites. They know every rite of the Veda. However much of Śiva's mantra a person has repeated, step by step,
134
so much is Śiva present in that body. There is no doubt. In the same way, the form of a woman devoted to Śiva is a liṅga of the Goddess.
134½
As much as she repeats the Goddess's mantra, so much is the Goddess present in her.
135
The wise one, taking on the form of sound, should worship Śiva.
136
And becoming Śiva oneself, one should worship the highest Śakti. One should worship Śakti in an image, in a liṅga or in a drawing, with a mind free of deceit.
137
Seeing Śiva's liṅga as Śiva, one sees oneself as the form of Śakti. Seeing Śakti's liṅga as the Goddess, one sees oneself as the form of Śiva.
Śiva's liṅga is in the form of nāda. With Śakti, it is in the form of the bindu. As the lesser and the chief, the two liṅgas are bound to each other.
139
One who worships Śiva and Śakti becomes Śiva through that root feeling. And he should worship Śiva's devotees, who are the form of Śiva's mantra and the form of Śiva,
The face is called the liṅga. So is the body of Śiva's devotee described. For the dead, whether they had the cremation and other rites or were left without them,
One given to meditation is better than a hundred thousand who know Śiva. One resting in samādhi is better than ten million given to meditation.
149
Because each is higher than the one before, the fruit of worshipping them grows higher and higher too. Even the wise find that special fruit hard to know.
150
So what man can know the greatness of Śiva's devotee? The worship of Śiva and Śakti, and the worship of Śiva's devotee:
151
the man who does these with devotion becomes Śiva and grows in good. Whoever reads this chapter, which agrees with the Veda, and grasps its meaning,
The answer given draws a line between two systems rather than issuing a blanket ruling. In the vaidik vidhan, no — that is stated flatly, and the sarcasm is aimed at people who pretend otherwise. In the tantrokta vidhan, which this is, yes — a woman may offer ordinary ahutis and there is no difficulty in it. This is the Jagadamba's vidhan.
Likewise, asked whether a woman can complete a Chandi path in a single day: yes, if the vidhi is known, the pronunciation is clear and there is a guru's order — and in Hindi if she prefers.
Paran belongs to Dashami — this is where most vrats break
Correction
The most common way a Navratri vrat is quietly broken: doing kanya pujan on Ashtami and taking paran the same day, or doing it on Navami and taking paran that evening.
The reasoning is arithmetic, not sentiment. Break on Ashtami and where are your nine days — Shailputri's pujan is still outstanding, Dashami's whole vidhan is still outstanding. Whether you did kanya pujan on Ashtami or on Navami, paran waits for Dashami to begin.
Before you eat: touch and set aside things for daan — grain, fruit, spices, oil, ghee, as your capacity allows — take the sankalp, and make the samarpan, offering the whole vrat to the Jagadamba. Then paran.
The same act bears a multiplied fruit according to the time it is done in, and the end of a vow is ranked among those charged times.

They say that the merit of a person pure in mind, earned on a pure day, gives the basic fruit. Wise ones, know that when the sun enters a new sign it is ten times more than that.
9
At the equinox it is ten times that. At the solstice it is said to be ten times that. When the sun enters Mṛga, it is ten times that. At an eclipse of the moon, it is ten times that.
10
And beyond that, they say, at an eclipse of the sun, the finest of times, the fruit is full. The sun is the form of the world. At that time the sun comes into contact with poison, and this brings disease.
11
So, to calm that poison, one should do bathing, giving and chanting. Because it is a time for calming poison, that time is said to give merit.

They say that the day of one's birth-star and the end of a vow are like an eclipse of the sun. And they say that time spent with great souls is like ten million eclipses of the sun.

The Dashami morning order, before anything else: Aparajita pujan, then Shami Puja, then the jaware that have grown are offered to the Devi.
Then Visarjan proper — and the first physical act of it is moving the kalash, which is how the Devi's whole assembled family is sent back to their places. Everything else follows that.
One regional exception is named: if Dashami falls on a Thursday, the kalash is not taken out of the house. It is still moved, but not removed.
Not when the kanya pujan is done. Not when the path is finished. The jyot burns until the kalash is moved.
The principle stated is the reason: you performed an avahan, and until you have performed the vidai the Devi has not been sent. After visarjan, if the lamp goes out by itself, there is no difficulty at all. What must never happen is extinguishing it because the visible parts of the observance are over.
Called, in as many words, the biggest piece of foolishness people commit at Navratri — and it is done in nearly every house. At visarjan the coconut is lifted off the kalash, cracked, and distributed as prasad, either at the river or back home.
The objection is not superstition but identity: that coconut is the Devi's own form. It has received nine days of worship; the Jagadamba has been seated in it and in the jyot for nine days. It is not prasad and it never becomes prasad.
What to do instead: leave it in the river at visarjan, or bring it home and keep it in the pujan sthan and worship it — in which case you will do its visarjan next year. If it has sprouted, you may plant it somewhere clean and water it and let it grow; that is said to protect the house.

From Ekadashi: the rule that decides whether any of it survives
Essential
This is the part of the corpus with no equivalent in the usual Navratri material, and the one that has real consequences. What is described is a specific, recognisable pattern: sadhakas who did everything well through Navratri fall ill two or four days after it, or become avesh-prone, and conclude the puja was wasted.
The explanation given is that it is not wasted but unguarded. Nine days of japa, havan and fasting leave the annamaya kosha purified and the aura shubhra — visibly so, one or two days after paran, when sleep has caught up: the mind quiet, the face lit, a real tript-ness. Negative energies read that state accurately and are drawn to it precisely because you now have something. Dropping every practice on the tenth day is described as gathering the whole treasure and then standing at a crossroads with it.
From Ekadashi, continue. One mala minimum of the same mantra you did; up to ten if the mantra is short, one if it is long. The kavach and the mantra both, together, daily. Then a laghu havan on Purnima — a single mala's worth is enough, but do it.
Two specific mistakes are named. The first is eating heavily the moment paran is done, to "make up" for nine days. The second, worse, is going straight to tamasic food — onion, garlic, heavy masala — on Dashami itself, or two days later on the reasoning that enough time has passed.
The mechanism given: body heat spikes suddenly, and the annamaya kosha you spent nine days purifying starts degrading from that meal. The shubhra quality of the aura is what held the satvik energy in place.
Ramp up gradually, and be back to your ordinary diet only by Purnima. Keep a limit; don't disturb it hard.
And BrahmacharyaStrict celibacy required through an extended ritual observance. — physical and mental — continues until Purnima, not until Dashami. This is stated in the knowledge that it will not be popular.
A sadhaka finishes a Navratri anushthan, a neighbour has an affliction, and the mantra gets used. The warning is precise about what happens: the affliction may well go — and your energy goes with it. You did 11,000 japa; you have no way of knowing how much of it that cost, because it depends on what is on the other person and what punya they have left.
Two consequences are named. The stock is not inexhaustible — punya is what is akshaya, and it is being spent here. And a force that cannot reach you may reach the people around you, who carry none of your protection.
The bar given before applied use: keep the purashcharan running through four or five Navratris — gupt or prakat, either — with 11 or 21 mala daily in between, and japa plus havan at every parva-kala. Make the samarpan at a Shakti Peeth. For Saptashati specifically, the bar is at least a Satchandi, with Navchandi as the earlier floor — and, for the count that actually confers authority, 108 paath offered to the Devi, plus the Navarna adhikara that requires diksha.
Stated plainly, and worth keeping: you are responsible for the gain and the loss both.
A small, specific practice for anyone following the aarti vidhan where cloves are added each day. When the lamps have gone cold, collect the burnt cloves and keep collecting them through the nine days.
Afterwards, grind them, mix in kesar, and use the powder as your daily tilak once Navratri is over. It answers the question of what to do with everything that has been burned, without any of it being simply discarded.
The instruction for householders in Gupt Navratri runs against what most sources say, and is given firmly: a householder has no need to do kalash sthapana in Gupt Navratri, and should not. That belongs to sadhakas already far along the path who will then do it every year without fail.
An akhand jyot is possible if your capacity is genuinely there — but it commits you to staying at home for the duration, which is the practical constraint people miss. The general position is that Gupt Navratri does not need this much karmakand from a householder.
What it does want is repetition: redo the sadhana you did in an earlier Navratri, not a new one. Gupt Navratri is where the count on an existing anushthan grows.
The requests that arrive every Gupt Navratri are named directly — jinn siddhi, pari siddhi, yakshini, kan-pishachini — and refused as a category. The material given on this channel is stated as being for householders: no aghor sadhana, no masanik or shmashanik sadhana, no kache kalve, no dakini or shakini, nothing of that order.
The observation offered about why the pull exists is worth more than the refusal: siddhi and chamatkar are the two words the field is most impatient about, and a person can reach the point of accepting any siddhi, a pret-pishachini included, just to have one. The advice given for a householder is to build tapo-bala first, which is the slow answer nobody wants.
Answers as given in the discourses, in reply to the questions people actually put — not a rewritten FAQ. Each answer links to the moment it was given.
Yes, and it is answered as such without qualification — anyone doing Navratri for the first time can start this Navratri. Do the Ghatasthapana at a shubh muhurat on Pratipada and follow the householder krama.
If even the Sanskrit is out of reach, the floor is the Durga Chalisa, by chakra-vidhi if you can and plainly if you cannot. What is asked is that you not let the nine days pass with nothing in them.
Not for the path itself — but with a condition, and the condition is about accuracy rather than status. If you are reading in Sanskrit without diksha, everything must be genuinely correct; no fault in the pronunciation. The instruction given is to take upadesh from a brahmin who does Gayatri, or, failing that, the permission of an elder in your own household who does sadhana. Taking that permission is called the better course.
Navarna is different — one mala is fine without diksha; the anushthan is not. And for using Saptashati toward a specific end, you need both a Satchandi behind you and the Navarna adhikara, which does require diksha.
Yes — and it is put more strongly than permission. Do not recite bad Sanskrit. Read the whole thing in Hindi, with bhav, and the objection that Hindi does not work is dismissed outright.
The Kavach may be read in Hindi too. But the concession comes with a horizon attached: seven hundred shlokas at ten a day is roughly two months and ten days to fluent recitation, and fifteen to thirty minutes daily gets you there inside six months.
Relight it as soon as you see it. Then, at your next sitting, one mala of yā devī sarvabhūteṣu kṣamā-rūpeṇa saṃsthitā as PrayashchittaRitual atonement performed to offset the karmic burden of a weighty act, such as a Shatkarma that results in an enemy's death.. That is the complete remedy.
Prevention is the more useful half of the answer: make the wick long enough that it never needs changing, since the usual causes are carbon build-up being scraped away and the wick simply ending mid-observance.

An evening sandhyā done a muhūrta before sunset is fruitless. The right time is taught, rather than the wrong time. If the sandhyā is missed and the day passes, he should make amends in due order.

When a day has passed, he should recite the Gāyatrī a hundred times for each missed time, beyond the daily rule. When more than ten days have passed, he should recite the Gāyatrī a hundred thousand times. But when a month has passed without the daily rite, he should undergo the sacred-thread rite again.
Dashami. Whether the kanya pujan was done on Ashtami or on Navami, the fast runs until Dashami begins.
The reason given is that the nine days are not complete otherwise — Shailputri's pujan and the whole Dashami vidhan are still outstanding, and breaking early is stated to break the vrat. On the specific case where a sadhaka wants to take paran on Navami: that is left to them, but the vidhan followed in the Vindhya region and given here is Dashami.
Never break it. It received nine days of worship and is the Devi's own form; cracking it and handing it out as prasad is called the single biggest folly people commit here, and a real dosha.
Either leave it in the river at visarjan, or bring it home, keep it in the pujan sthan and worship it — doing its visarjan the following year. If it has sprouted, plant it in a clean spot and let it grow.
Havan first, always. If the path finished on Saptami and kanya pujan is on Ashtami, do the havan on Ashtami morning and the kanya pujan after it. If the path finished on Ashtami, both move to Navami in the same order.
In the vaidik vidhan, no. In the tantrokta vidhan — which this is — yes, without difficulty; ordinary ahutis are fine. This is the Jagadamba's own vidhan.
The practical distinction that goes with it: women keep the guggul proportion higher, men keep the ghee proportion higher.
No. Their seva requires at least some upvas, and the answer given is to ask the Devi for the capacity rather than do it half-way.
The alternative is a different observance, not a lesser grace: drop the ghat entirely and do a full, generous morning and evening pujan instead. That carries the Devi's kripa too, and it is said so explicitly.
Yes, in both directions. Nine days of upvas without any ghat established is confirmed as fine — the Devi's seva and pujan can be done without a ghat. And a daily Chandi Path with panchopachar pujan, a karma-sakshi deepak and a satvik bali, with no ghatasthapana, is likewise confirmed as fine.
The position taken is the reverse, and it is taken sharply. Night is the Devi's time; 9pm to 1am is the window named for the nine nights. Someone teaching that Saptashati must not be read at night is described as costing the sadhaka.
The written prohibition is acknowledged to exist. What is objected to is quoting it without ever discussing why it was written — and the counter-question offered is simply: if the nights were not the point, why is the observance called nava-ratri rather than nava-dina?
The last twenty minutes of Ashtami and the first twenty minutes of Navami — the junction of the two tithis. It is the window in which Chamunda, the greatest tantrokta form of the Jagadamba, appeared, and her energy is described as pervading the whole brahmanda then.
What is done in it: the bali, the deepdaan, and the pujan of that form. Where the full vidhan is beyond you, one coconut and three lemons, with camphor and cloves burned, is the stated minimum.
No — the Navratri sankalp is for nine days and that is what it is. Asked whether a 21-day resolve could push visarjan to the 22nd day and move the kanya pujan with it, the answer is that it does not work that way.
If you want a 21-day anushthan, take it in another month, from Ashtami or from Shukla Pratipada, choosing the vidhi by which deity you are doing it for.
Yes, plainly. The same principle answers relocation: a sadhaka who used to do a full anushthan with an akhand jyot and a mandal, and no longer can, is told to do as much as is possible and that no dosha follows. Where even flowers and leaves are unavailable, a mental offering completes the pujan.

The framing given doesn't rank them; it assigns them different jobs. Whatever base sadhana you have chosen, run it in every Navratri. Gupt Navratri is where you repeat an existing anushthan rather than begin a new one, and where a householder should not be setting up a kalash at all.
The public Navratris carry the fuller vidhi — ghatasthapana, akhand jyot, the nine-night krama, kanya pujan. Sharadiya's Maha Ashtami midnight is singled out in several phalashrutis as the peak of the year for Devi path.
Across all of them, one instruction holds: pick one thing — the ekakshari beej, or 1100 of the 32-namavali, or the Kamakhya kavach, or 10,000 of Jayanti Mangala — and do that one thing every single Navratri, adding to it rather than replacing it.
Because they stopped. The nine days leave the annamaya kosha purified and the aura shubhra, and that state is legible to exactly the forces that are drawn to it. Dropping every practice on the tenth day is described as gathering the whole treasure and then standing unguarded with it — and the pattern that follows, illness or avesh two to four days after paran, is presented as the predictable result rather than a coincidence.
The remedy is small: from Ekadashi, at least one mala of the same mantra plus its Kavach, daily, and a laghu havan on Purnima.
No — and the distinction drawn here is sharp enough to be worth stating in full. A sadhaka who genuinely lacks means, offering a manas stuti from the heart, satisfies the Jagadamba, the kul-devata and the household deities alike; mansik pujan is called the highest form of pujan. The one requirement attached is that the panchopachar be done mentally too, since no pujan is counted complete without the manasopachar.
The offence is the opposite case: a sadhaka who can afford flowers, naivedya and paan and withholds them on the reasoning that the Devi is pleased by bhav alone. That bhav is said to be accepted — but to be redeemed in the next world, not this one, and the shortfall to show up in this life as a corresponding shortfall.
When means are lacking, a poor man should sacrifice by speech or by act; done with the thought of an offering to the deity, little or much serves.

Withholding offerings a sadhaka can genuinely afford is not the higher, inward path — in this age the wealth-borne form of dharma is the one praised, and knowledge is reached through the worship of the image.
The verses rank each age's proper means; they name no Navratri offering and no offence for skimping. What they do carry is the distinction the discourses turn on — that austerity-by-omission is the earlier ages' path and not this one's — which is why the same sources treat a poor sadhaka's mental worship as complete (15.56–58) and an able one's cost-cutting as an aparādha.

In the Kṛta age and those after it, austerity is praised. In the Kali age, the dharma of wealth is praised.
In the Kṛta age knowledge is won through meditation, and in the Tretā through austerity. In the Dvāpara it comes through sacrifice, and in the Kali through worship of the sacred image.
No. Asked about Ratri Suktam and Jayanti Mangala Kali together, the answer is to pick one — both carry prachand shaktis, and running both leaves each under-served and you managing what arrives. Given as a general rule: one mantra's japa at a time is always better.
Mistakes That Cost the Vrat
These are the corrections the discourses make most often — each one is something widely done, not a hypothetical.
Taking paran on Ashtami or Navami
The most common structural break. Kanya pujan finishing is not the vrat finishing — Shailputri's pujan and the whole Dashami vidhan remain. Whichever day the kanya pujan fell on, the fast runs into Dashami.
Letting the jyot go out because the puja looks finished
Extinguishing the akhand jyot after kanya pujan, or after the path completes, is the error. The avahan has been made and the vidai has not; the lamp burns until the kalash is moved. After visarjan it may go out by itself with no difficulty at all.
Done at nearly every visarjan, and named as the biggest folly of the lot. That coconut has taken nine days of pujan and is the Devi's own form. River, or home shrine and next year's visarjan — never a crack and a distribution.
Stuffing yourself with fruit because fruit is permitted makes the vrat meaningless in as many words. Same for a physically capable person eating full meals through the nine days. The vrat is the giving up of taste before it is the giving up of grain — the internal organs are meant to be resting too.
Skipping the naivedya, the flowers, the paan-supari on the reasoning that the Devi is pleased by bhav alone — while having the means. The bhav is accepted, but it is credited to the next world; the material shortfall is repaid as a material shortfall in this one. A sadhaka who genuinely has nothing is in an entirely different position, and mansik pujan is complete for them.
Withholding offerings a sadhaka can genuinely afford is not the higher, inward path — in this age the wealth-borne form of dharma is the one praised, and knowledge is reached through the worship of the image.

Nine days of restraint followed by an immediate return on Dashami is called the largest single waste of what was accumulated. Both physical and mental brahmacharya are asked to run until Purnima. It is stated in full knowledge that a lot of listeners will dislike it.
Onion, garlic and heavy masala on Dashami itself — or two days later, on the reasoning that enough time has passed. Body heat spikes, the koshas destabilise, and the nine days' purification starts unwinding from that meal. Increase the diet gradually and be back to ordinary food only by Purnima.
The single most consequential omission on this page. From Ekadashi: one mala minimum of the same mantra, its kavach alongside it, daily — and a laghu havan on Purnima. Sadhakas who do none of this are the ones who fall ill or become avesh-prone within days of a Navratri that went well.
Jhaad-phoonk, or a prayoga against an enemy, immediately after the anushthan. The affliction may lift and your own accumulated energy goes with it, in an amount you have no way of estimating. What cannot reach you may reach your family, who carry none of your protection. Four or five Navratris of purashcharan first, and the samarpan made at a shakti-peeth.
Chasing whichever practice sounds most powerful this year and a different one next year. Options exist so that you can find one you will actually complete — not so that you can rotate through them. Fix one base and keep it for life; add to it, never replace it.
Taking a nine-day fasting sankalp you will not keep is what later reads as a broken vrat. If you intend to fast only on the first and last days, say exactly that when you take the resolve. A smaller sankalp kept in full is not a lesser observance.
Where a kalash and an akhand jyot are established, day one carries the full snan vidhi and after that the vigraha does not leave its seat. If your daily niyam includes abhishek, rebuild the arrangement so the water runs off in place rather than abandoning either the abhishek or the rule.
Where you already carry a family or guru-parampara vidhi for Navratri, follow that first — this checklist collects what the discourses recommend to a householder sadhaka with no existing tradition of their own to draw on, and several items on it (Gupt Navratri's kalash, paran on Dashami, brahmacharya until Purnima) are stated as this tradition's position rather than as universal rulings.
