The first sopāna opens with seven Sanskrit ślokas. They bow to Sarasvatī and Gaṇeśa, to Pārvatī and Śiva, to the Guru, to Vālmīki and Hanumān, to Sītā, and to Rāma himself, the one cause of everything. The seventh says why the poet writes: for the joy of his own heart, in the common speech, he spreads the story of Raghunātha. A soraṭhā then asks Gaṇeśa for his mercy.

I bow to Vāṇī and Vināyaka, who make the letters, the groups of meanings, the rasas, the metres, and every good thing.
Explanation
Vāṇī is Sarasvatī, the goddess of speech; Vināyaka is Gaṇeśa.

I bow to Bhavānī and Śaṅkara, who are faith and trust themselves. Without them even the perfected cannot see the Lord who lives within their own hearts.

The whole world, with Brahmā, the gods and the demons, lives under his illusion. By his reality the false world looks true, as a rope looks like a snake. His feet are the one boat for those who wish to cross the ocean of becoming. I bow to that Lord Hari called Rāma, the highest cause of all.
Explanation
A rope seen in the dark is mistaken for a snake; the fear is real, the snake is not. In the same way the world seems real until the Lord is known.

This story of Raghunātha agrees with many Purāṇas, Vedas and Āgamas, and with what is told in the Rāmāyaṇa and elsewhere. For the joy of his own heart, Tulasī spreads it in the common speech, in a very lovely composition.
