Chapter One·Prayer and the Guru's dust·Verses 1–
Four more soraṭhās call on the Lord. First, the one whose mercy makes the dumb speak and the lame climb mountains. Then the dark-blue Viṣṇu who sleeps on the milk ocean. Then Śiva, husband of Umā, who burned Kāma. Then the Guru, the ocean of mercy in human form. The poet then bows to the dust of the Guru's lotus feet. It is like a healing powder that takes away the sickness of worldly life. Rubbed on the forehead, it wins over all good qualities. The nails of the Guru's feet shine like jewels and give divine sight. Whoever sees that light has his eyes opened, and Rāma's story, hidden and open, becomes clear to him.

I bow to the dust of the Guru's lotus feet, sweet in scent, lovely in taste, and full of love. It is a pleasing powder of nectar and healing herbs, which drives away the whole family of illnesses of worldly life.

It is the pure ash on the body of Śiva, the blessed one, a lovely source of joy and all good. It cleans the mirror of the mind of the devotee. Worn as a mark on the forehead, it brings all good qualities under one's control.
Verse 3

The shining nails of the Guru's feet are like a cluster of jewels. Remembering them, divine sight rises in the heart. They scatter the darkness of delusion with their light. Greatly blessed is he in whose heart they come.
Verse 4

The clear eyes of that person open. The faults, the pain and the night of worldly life are gone. Rāma's story shines for him like jewels and gems, hidden or open, wherever and in whichever mine they lie.
Verse

As a seeker, wise and perfected, puts ointment on his eyes and sees hills, forests and the earth with its many hidden treasures, as if in play, so does he who has the Guru's dust.
