Chapter 35 · Why it is called Mānasa · Verses 1–

Seeing, touching, bathing in and drinking the Sarayū take away sin, say the Vedas and Purāṇas. The river is holy and its greatness endless, beyond even clear-minded Śāradā. Ayodhyā, Rāma's city, gives the highest home and is known to all as holy. In the world are countless living beings of four kinds, and none who leave their body in Ayodhyā is born in the world again. Knowing the city lovely in every way, a giver of all powers and a mine of good, the poet began the clean tale; hearing it, lust, pride and hypocrisy are destroyed. Its name is Rāmacaritamānasa; hearing it with the ear one finds rest. The mind that burns in the forest-fire of the senses will be happy if it falls in this lake. This lovely, holy Rāmacaritamānasa, dear to sages, was made by Śambhu; it destroys the three kinds of fault, pain and poverty and the dirt of the age. Mahesa made it and kept it in his own mind, and at the right time told it to Śivā. So, seeing it in his heart, Hara was glad and gave it the fine name Rāmacaritamānasa. The poet tells that same tale, joyful and lovely; hear it with respect, good people. In the dohā he promises to tell all: how the Mānasa came to be, how it spread in the world, and why, remembering Umā and the bull-bannered Śiva.

The Vedas and Purāṇas say that seeing, touching, bathing in and drinking of the river take away sin. The river is holy, and its greatness is endless. Not even Śāradā of clear mind can tell it.
