Chapter 324·The giving of the bride·Verses 1–
Janaka's chief queen, Sītā's mother, is known to the world, and who could describe her? The Creator gathered up all fame, merit, joy and beauty and made her. At the right time the sages call, and the married women respectfully bring her. Sunayanā shines at Janaka's left, like Menā beside the Himalaya. They set before Rāma gold pots and jewelled trays filled with pure, scented, auspicious water. With bodies thrilled with love, Janaka and the queen wash his lotus feet, and a cry of victory rises in sky and city. These are the feet that always dwell in the lake of Śiva's heart, that at once clean away the dirt of the Kali age in a remembering mind, that freed the sage's wife from sin, whose honey Śiva bears on his head, and which sages and yogis serve as bees to reach their goal. Both family gurus recite the lineage over the joined hands of bride and groom, and the hand-taking is done. Janaka gives the bride, as the Himalaya gave Girijā to Śiva and the Ocean gave Śrī to Viṣṇu. With the fire kindled, the knotting of the garments is done and the circling of the fire begins.

As the Himalaya gave Girijā to Maheśa and the Ocean gave Śrī to Hari, so Janaka gave Sītā to Rāma, and a new lovely fame spread through the universe. How could Videha, the bodiless one, make his plea? He made himself bodiless before the dark form. After offering to the fire by the rules, the garments were knotted and the circling began.
Explanation
Videha means 'without body'; Janaka is known for being unmoved by body-awareness, yet here he loses even that before Rāma.

Shouts of victory, the chant of the Vedas, praise-singers, songs and drums — hearing them, the wise gods rejoiced and rained flowers from the wishing tree.
