Chapter 31·The story in common speech·Verses 1–
Hearer and speaker are stores of knowledge, and Rāma's story is deep; how can a dull creature bound by the age's dirt understand it? The guru told it again and again, and he understood a little by his own wit, and will put that into common speech so his own mind may be calmed. As his understanding, judgement and strength allow, so he will tell it, by Hari's prompting. The story takes away his doubt, delusion and error, and is a boat across the river of becoming. It is a resting place of the wise, delights all, and destroys the dirt of the age. It is a mongoose to the age's serpents and a tinder-stick to the fire of judgement; a wish-cow, a healing herb, a river of nectar on earth, a killer of fear, and a frog-eating snake to error. It is like Durgā to the demon host, like Lakṣmī to the saints, like Earth, like the Yamunā to the face of Yama, like Kāśī for freedom in life, dear to Rāma like the tulasī, a joy to Tulasīdāsa, like Narmadā to Śiva, like Aditi to the gods, and the measure of love for Raghubara. The dohā ends: Rāma's story is the Mandākinī, the heart is Citrakūṭa, and love is the forest where Sītā and Rāma play.

Even so, the guru told it again and again, and by my wit I understood a little. I will put that into the common speech, so that my own mind may be set at rest.

As much as I have of understanding, judgement and strength, I will tell it so, prompted by Hari in my heart. It takes away my doubt, delusion and error, and I make the story a boat for the river of becoming.

As Durgā breaks the army of demons, it breaks hell. It is like Pārvatī, the mountain's daughter, to the family of saints and gods. It is Lakṣmī to the sea of saints, and like the steady Earth that bears the load of the world.
