Chapter Nine · The Description of the Body · Verses 1–51

Śiva begins to teach Rāma what the body is. The world is born from him, rests on him and dissolves into him, as silver seen in a shell comes and goes while the shell stays. Beginningless ignorance, with its three strands of brightness, passion and dullness, is the mother of the world. From the five elements comes the body, and the chapter then lists its parts: what comes from the mother, from the father, from food-juice and from the self; the five senses of knowing and the five of acting; mind, intellect, ego and thought; the five breaths and the five lesser winds, each with its place and work; the share each element gives; how food becomes waste, flesh and mind; the measures of the fluids; the number of bones and joints; and the hairs of the body. It closes by saying that nothing in the three worlds is so empty of substance as this body, and that the wise should understand it so.

I will tell you the nature of the body. Listen with attention, O king. The world is born from me, and by me alone it is held up. It dissolves into me, its base, like silver seen in a shell.

Explanation

Silver seen in a shell is only the shell mistaken for silver; it appears and vanishes while the shell stays as it was. The world stands to Śiva in the same way.

Joined with beginningless ignorance, I become the cause of the world.

The great ignorance cannot be described. She has three strands and she keeps changing. Her strands are named passion, brightness and dullness.

The body hairs number three and a half crore, and the beard and head hairs three lakh. Thus the nature of the body is told to you, O son of Daśaratha, since in the three worlds there is no thing so empty of substance.

Explanation

The line says the body is the most empty of substance of all things, and the measures above are given so that attachment to it falls away.

Alas, now, through pride in this body and through sinful ego, people are made to have no mind for the great means.

Explanation

The great means is the knowledge that leads to freedom.
