Rāma asks what the soul is, where it comes from, where it goes at the end of the body, and whether it returns. Śiva says this is the most secret teaching and tells it out of pleasure in Rāma's devotion. He is truth, knowing and bliss, beyond the senses and the mind, and the knower of all. Joined with ignorance he appears as the soul, and the chapter describes how: the ten senses, the four parts of the inner instrument and the five winds make the subtle body, in which awareness is reflected; the soul is the everyday self that enjoys and suffers, as a face looks dirty in a stained mirror and desert rays look like water. It lives in the heart, in a space as fine as a hundredth of a hair-tip divided a hundredfold, from which seventy-two thousand channels spread out, one of them going up to the head. The chapter then follows the soul through waking, dream and deep sleep, using the pot-space, the hawk returning to its nest and the sparks of a fire, and ends by saying that only delusion keeps the self, which shines by itself, from knowing what it is.

With impressions raised by action, and with the wish to play in dream, the self goes into another state, like an illusionist, by its own illusion.
Explanation
An impression is the mark that an experience leaves behind in the mind. Dream is made of these marks.
