Chapter Eight·The Vision of the Universal Form·Verses 1–70
Rāma asks how the body, made of the five elements, arises, lasts and ends, and what its nature is. Śiva answers that the body is made of the five elements, with earth chief, and is of four kinds: womb-born, egg-born, sweat-born and sprout-born; the gods have a further, mind-born kind. He then describes the womb-born body month by month: how seed and blood meet, how the child forms, when each part appears, the mother's cravings, and the child's own suffering in the womb as it remembers its past lives and longs for release. Birth is painful, infancy helpless, youth blind with desire, old age sick and scorned, and death the worst of all, when no kin can protect a person and the body is burned or eaten and never seen again. Like birds on an evening tree, kin meet and part. Birth and death are seed to each other, and a person turns like a pot on a wheel. For this great disease Śiva says there is no medicine but himself.
