Chapter 35 · The march to the sea · Verses 1–

पयान

The monkeys bow at the Lord's lotus feet, and the mighty bears and monkeys roar. Rāma looks at the whole army with kind lotus eyes. Having received his grace and strength, the monkey chiefs are winged like mountains. Rāma then gladly sets out, and many good signs appear. The one whose whole fame is blessed, for him this sign of a march is only right. Vaidehī knows her Lord is on the way, as her left side throbs as if to say so. Every sign that is good for Jānakī is bad for Rāvaṇa. The army sets out, impossible to tell, with monkeys and bears in endless numbers roaring. With nails for weapons, carrying hills and trees, the monkeys move through sky and earth as they please. They roar like lions and the elephants of the directions stagger and cry out. The chhands describe the elephants of the directions trumpeting, the earth quaking, the hills moving and the ocean churned; gods, sages and others glad, and the warriors running and crying 'Victory to Rāma'. Even the king of serpents cannot bear the weight, and holds the turtle's hard back in his teeth; it looks as if he is writing Rāma's lovely march there forever. In this way the Lord of mercy reached the sea shore and camped; all around the bears and monkeys began to eat fruit.

They bow their heads at the Lord's lotus feet, and the mighty bears and monkeys roar. Rāma looked at the whole monkey army, his lotus eyes full of kindness.

Gaining strength by Rāma's grace, the monkey chiefs became like mountains with wings. Then Rāma gladly set out, and many lovely and happy signs appeared.

For the one whose whole fame is full of blessing, such signs at his setting out are only right. Vaidehī knew her Lord had set out, for her left side throbbed as if to tell her.

Explanation

A throbbing on the left side is a good sign for a woman, but a bad one for a man.

Verse 4

Every sign that came to Jānakī was a bad omen for Rāvaṇa. The army marched; who can tell its size? Countless bears and monkeys roared.

The elephants of the directions trumpet, the earth shakes, the hills sway and the oceans churn. Gandharvas, gods, sages, nāgas and kinnaras are glad at heart, for their sorrow is gone. Fierce monkey warriors gnash their teeth and run in millions upon millions, crying 'Victory to Rāma', and sing the virtues of the lord of Kosala and his mighty glory.

The generous king of serpents cannot bear the weight, and is troubled again and again. Again and again he grips the hard back of the turtle in his teeth. How well that looks! It is as if, knowing Raghubīra's lovely march to be so beautiful, the king of serpents were writing it on the turtle's shell, a holy record that cannot be moved.

Explanation

The turtle holds up the earth, and the serpent king Śeṣa lies on it. The marks of his teeth on the shell look like writing.

In this way the Lord of mercy went on and came down on the shore of the sea. Here and there the many bears and monkey heroes began to eat fruit.
