In Laṅkā the demons live in fear ever since the monkey burnt the city. In every house they talk of it, saying there is no safety for the family of demons. The one whose messenger's strength cannot be told: what good can come to the city when he himself comes? Hearing what the townspeople told the messengers, Mandodarī was very troubled. Alone, she folded her hands and touched her husband's feet, and spoke words soaked in right counsel: 'Dear husband, give up the quarrel with Hari and take my advice to heart. The one whose messenger's deeds, when thought of, make demon women miscarry, send his wife back through your ministers, if you want your good. Sītā has come as a cold night to the lotuses of your family. Listen, Lord: without giving her back, Śambhu and Brahmā cannot do you good. Rāma's arrows are like a crowd of serpents, and the demons are like frogs; until they have swallowed them, give up your stubbornness and make an effort.'
