Chapter 37 · Rāvaṇa laughs it off · Verses 1–

Hearing her words, the fool laughed, the proud one known to the world. 'A woman's nature is full of fear. Even in good things her mind is weak. If the monkey army comes, the poor demons will live by eating them. The one whose terror makes the guardians of the world shake: his wife is afraid! It is quite a joke.' He pressed her to his heart, laughing, and went to the court, his pride greater. Mandodarī in her heart thinks: fate has turned against her husband. He sits in the court and gets the news that the whole army has come across the sea. He asks his ministers what is the right plan. They laugh and say 'Keep quiet. You conquered gods and demons, and there was no labour. What are men and monkeys?' The Dohā says: if a minister, a doctor and a teacher speak only pleasant words out of fear or hope, the kingdom, the body and the faith are soon lost.
