Chapter Twelve·Sītā and the ring·Verses 1–
Sītā folds her hands to Trijaṭā and calls her a companion in trouble. She says the pain of parting is more than she can bear and asks her to bring wood and make a pyre, and then light it, so that her love is proved true. Trijaṭā calms her with the Lord's power, strength and fame, and says no fire can be had at night. She goes home. Sītā cries that fate is against her, for no fire comes and the pain does not end. The sky seems full of embers but no star falls, and the moon, full of fire, sheds no flame. She begs the Aśoka tree to give her fire and take her sorrow, as its name says. To her the new shoots look like fire. Seeing her so grieved, a moment passed for Hanumān like an age. He thought, and dropped the ring. It seemed as if the Aśoka tree had given her an ember, and she rose gladly and took it.
