Chapter 71·The death of Kumbhakarṇa·Verses 1–
The gods are afraid, and the Lord of mercy sees it. He draws the bow to his ear and fills the giant's mouth with arrows, yet the mighty one does not fall. With his mouth full of arrows he runs at Rāma like Death with a full quiver. Then Rāma takes a sharp arrow in anger and cuts his head from his body. The head falls before Rāvaṇa, who is left helpless like a snake that has lost its jewel. The trunk, charging on, sinks into the earth, and Rāma cuts it in two. The two halves fall like a mountain from the sky, crushing monkeys, bears and night-rangers beneath. His light entered the Lord's face, and the gods and sages were amazed. The gods beat drums and praise Rāma and shower flowers; Nārada comes and sings Hari's qualities, and Rāma is pleased by the heroic mood. The sage tells Rāma to kill the wretch quickly and goes. Rāma shines on the field of battle. Rāma gave the lowest of the night-rangers, a mine of impurity, his own abode. Girijā, those men are dull-minded who do not worship Śrī Rāma.

The Lord of mercy knew that the gods were afraid. He drew the bow to his ear and filled the night-ranger's mouth with a mass of arrows, yet the very strong one still did not fall to the ground.

With his mouth full of arrows he ran straight at Rāma, as though Death's quiver had come alive. Then the Lord took up a sharp arrow in anger and cut his head from his body.

That head fell before Rāvaṇa, who was left helpless like a snake without its jewel. The headless body rushed on and made the earth sink; then the Lord cut it in two.

The two halves fell to the ground like mountains falling from the sky, pressing monkeys, bears and night-rangers beneath them. His brightness entered the Lord's face, and gods and sages all were amazed.

The gods beat their drums and rejoiced; they sang praises and rained down many flowers. Having made their prayers, all the gods departed, and at that moment the divine sage came.

Above in the sky he sang the many virtues of Hari; the lovely heroic mood pleased the Lord. 'Kill the wretch quickly,' said the sage, and went. Rāma shone on the field of battle.

Raghupati, lord of Kosala, shone on the field of battle with matchless strength, drops of sweat on his face, lotus eyes, and his body marked with red drops of blood. His two arms were turning the arrows and the bow, with the bears and monkeys around him on all sides. Tulasīdāsa says that Śeṣa, with all his mouths, could not describe that beauty.
