Chapter 72 · Meghanāda takes the field · Verses 1–

At day's end both armies turn back, the warriors weary. By Rāma's grace the monkey army grows stronger, like dry grass catching fire; the night-rangers waste away day and night, as the merit of one who boasts of his own good deeds. Rāvaṇa laments much, holding his brother's head to his chest, and the women beat their breasts and praise his strength. Meghanāda comes then and comforts his father, saying that tomorrow Rāvaṇa will see his manhood; he has been given strength and a chariot by his chosen deity and has not yet shown it. They talk like this until dawn, and the monkeys are posted at all four gates. On one side stand monkeys and bears like Death, on the other the very steady night-rangers; the warriors fight, each for his own victory, which cannot be told. Meghanāda climbs his chariot of illusion, goes into the sky and roars with a great laugh, and terror falls on the monkey army.

At the end of the day both armies turned back, and the warriors were very tired in the fight. By Rāma's grace the strength of the monkey army grew, like dry grass catching a great fire.

The night-rangers waste away day and night, as one's merit wastes when he speaks of it with his own mouth. Rāvaṇa lamented much, holding his brother's head again and again to his heart.
