Chapter 73·Meghanāda binds Rāma with serpents·Verses 1–
From the sky Meghanāda rains spears, swords, axes, clubs and arrows until the ten directions are covered, like the monsoon of the Maghā star. Unseen, he is heard shouting 'seize, kill', and no one knows who strikes. The monkeys rush up with mountains and trees but come back in pain, and he makes a cage of arrows over every path. Hanumān, Aṅgada, Nala and Nīla are all made helpless, then Lakṣmaṇa, Sugrīva and Vibhīṣaṇa are riddled. He fights Raghupati and his arrows turn into serpents which bind him. The one free, unchanging Lord, who plays many tricks like an actor, let himself be bound for the show of battle, and the gods were afraid. Śiva says to Girijā: how can he whose name frees sages from the bonds of life come under bondage, he who is present in all the world?

Spears, lances, swords and curved blades, and many weapons and arms, even thunderbolts, he let fall; he began a shower of arrows, axes, iron clubs and stones.
Verse 2

Arrows covered the sky in the ten directions, as if the clouds of the Maghā star poured down rain. Cries of 'seize, kill' were heard, but no one knew who was striking.
Verse 3

The monkeys took up mountains and trees and ran at the sky, but not seeing him they came back in pain. In the narrow ways, the paths, the hills and caves, he made a cage of arrows by the power of his illusion.

Where could they go? The monkeys were distressed, like Mandara's mountains trapped when Indra clipped their wings. He distressed all the strong ones, Hanumān, Aṅgada, Nala and Nīla.

Then he pierced Lakṣmaṇa, Sugrīva and Vibhīṣaṇa with arrows and left their bodies riddled. Then he began to fight with Raghupati; the arrows he loosed became snakes and struck.
Verse 6

The destroyer of Khara came under the power of the serpent-nooses; yet the one Lord is under his own power, free from change. Like an actor he performs many tricks, ever independent, the one Lord.

Girijā, he by whose name sages cut the bonds of life: can he come under bondage, he in whom the whole world dwells and who is present everywhere?
