Chapter 61 · Rāma grieves for Lakṣmaṇa · Verses 1–

Half the night has passed and Hanumān has not come back. Rāma lifts Lakṣmaṇa to his chest and speaks like an ordinary man in sorrow. He reminds his brother how he left father and mother for his sake and bore cold, heat and wind in the forest. He says a wife, sons, wealth and a home can be had again and again, but a brother of the same womb cannot. He asks what face he will show in Ayodhyā, and what answer he will give to Sumitrā. The monkeys grow faint at his lament, and Hanumān arrives just then, like the heroic mood entering a scene of pity.

There Rāma looked at Lakṣmaṇa and spoke like an ordinary man. Half the night was gone and the monkey had not come. Rāma raised his younger brother and held him to his heart.

'You could never bear to see me in pain; your nature was always gentle, brother. For my sake you left father and mother, and bore the cold, the heat and the wind in the forest.

Where is that love now, brother? Why do you not get up when you hear my cry of distress? If I had known that the forest would part me from my brother, I would not have obeyed even my father's word.

Sons, wealth, wife, home and family come and go in the world again and again. Think of this in your heart and wake, dear brother; a brother of the same womb is not to be found in the world.

Verse 5

As a bird is wretched without wings, as a snake is without its jewel, as an elephant is without its trunk, so would my life be without you, brother, if blind fate were to keep me alive.

With what face shall I go back to Ayodhyā, having lost my dear brother for the sake of a woman? I would rather bear blame in the world; the loss of a wife is no great harm.

Now I must bear both this blame and the grief for you, son of Sumitrā, with my hard, cruel heart. You are the only son of your mother, dear one, and the support of her life.

In many ways he lamented and shed tears of grief, the water streaming from his lotus-petal eyes. Umā, Raghurāī is one and undivided; he showed the ways of men to his devotees out of kindness.

Explanation

Here Śiva speaks to Umā. Rāma's grief is a part he plays; in himself he is whole and unchanged.
