Chapter Nine·The Ear and the Other Limbs of Mantras·Verses 1–6
A technical section from the Yakṣaḍāmara on the "limbs" of a mantra — its ear, mouth, heart and eyes — declared by the Lord for the good of mortals and hard to find in the three worlds. First the ear: the sādhaka sits with steady mind, fixed on the deity's form, gazing at the tip of his own nose and not looking about, having withdrawn the mind from the senses; that inward absorption is the mantra's ear, and he should hear the words in no other way. Then the mouth, heart and eyes as they shine in the Saura, Gāṇapatya, Daurga, Śaiva and Bhautika mantras: the inquiry is made on the root letter, the bīja of a mantra; where a bīja joined with poison (visarga) is present, the mind must consider it; Rudrahaṃsī, Ḍiṇḍima and Vidruma, and Purī with the moon-dot, in order, are the bījas from which the mouth and the rest are to be worked out; so too Yama, Tyāgī, Śuka, Daṇḍī, Maṇibhadra, Ghaṭatkaca and Bhṛṅgī; where Yakṣeśvara (ha) stands in a mantra, that is chiefly its mouth, and in the absence of Caṇḍikā (visarga) Vidyut (a), Kṣetra and the rest are the heart. The twenty-four bījas of the Yakṣaḍāmara are then named — Jyotiḥ, Kapardī, Khadyota, Grāsinī, Surāntaka, Vaivasvata, Ketu, Śikhī, Prāṇaprahāriṇī, Kasmin, Ulkāmukhī, Jālandharī, Caṇḍa and Yugāntaka, Kiṅkarī, Piśitākṣī, Sukinnara, Manoharī, Dhvāṅkṣya, Vaitānika, Phetkāriṇī, Śūla and Payodhara — by which the heart, eyes and mouth of every mantra are known, secrets hidden in the tantras. The root letter is taught as the mouth and the vowels as the heart: the root letter is the praṇava, the mantra's mouth, and the sixteen vowel-powers are its heart. Where there is no praṇava, its stand-ins are given: the verses on "the beginning, middle and end" are decoded to mean that a praṇava at the beginning, middle or end of a mantra is its mouth, and otherwise the bīja built of Kīrti and Kālavaktra (a and u) with Mahākāla (ma) — the praṇava itself — and the śrī-bīja, Viṣṇu's beloved, honoured by the world, stand in its place. The other mouth-bījas follow, each decoded: kṣataja is ra, vyomavaktra ha, caṇḍogrā ī, with dot and nāda — the māyā-bīja; krodhīśa ka, raktaga ra, dhūmrabhairavī ī, with dot and nāda — the Kālī-bīja; ugrabhairavī ai — the vāgbhava; phaṭ the weapon, and svāhā, wife of fire; the kāma- and kūrca-bījas from Indrāsana, Brahmā, Trimūrti and Manmatha, Vyomāsya and Kālavaktra with the armour-dots; and śūnya ha, kṣataja ra, caṇḍabhairavī ai with the dots on the head — the jyotir-mantra. This is the supreme treasury of mantras declared by the primal god, hidden from the mouths of others, spoken by the lord of wrath to the great Bhairava. So wherever any of these ten bījas stands in a mantra, that is its mouth; and where two or three of them stand together, the earlier one is taken by the rule just stated.

Fixing his heart on the deity's form, firm-minded and composed, gazing at the tip of his own nose and not looking about at the directions, the sādhaka withdraws his mind from the senses and the rest with his whole being and sees; that absorption is the ear.
In the Saura mantra, likewise in the Gāṇapatya, the Daurga, the Śaiva, and in the Bhautika, the mouth, heart and eye shine as follows. This inquiry is made on the root letter, which is called the bīja of root mantras. When a bīja joined with poison is present, the inquiry is to be made in the mind. Rudrahaṃsī, Ḍiṇḍima and Vidruma, and Purī with the moon-dot are counted as bījas; from these, in order, one should work out the mouth and the rest.

So too: "The root letter is taught as the mouth, the heart is what is called the vowels." The root letter is the praṇava — that is the mantra's mouth. "The heart is the vowel-powers" — the powers made of the sixteen letters are the mantra's heart. And likewise: "The root letter is named the mouth, and its own powers the heart" — the vowel-powers are meant. Now, for the case where there is no praṇava, the same text gives the special rule on the bījas that have its nature: "At the beginning, middle or end; in the absence of the former, then the next. She who is called Kīrti, with Kālavaktra and with Mahākāla — accomplished; that beginningless five-rayed poison, imperishable through creation and preservation. The secret Caṇḍīśa joined with Śūlinī, with fire, moon and dot — this is the bīja of Viṣṇu's beloved, honoured by the world, dear to the world." "At the beginning, middle or end" means: if the praṇava stands at the beginning, middle or end of a mantra, then that itself is its mouth. "In the absence of the former, as follows" means the rule that applies when there is no praṇava: "she who is called Kīrti, with Kālavaktra" means with a and u, "with Mahākāla" means with ma — so accomplished, "that beginningless five-rayed one" is the praṇava itself. "This is the bīja of Viṣṇu's beloved" is the śrī-bīja — such is the construction of the two and a half verses. Thus in whatever mantra the śrī-bīja and the rest are present, that itself is the mouth, since it has the nature of the praṇava. Hence the text goes on to give in order the bījas that form a mantra's mouth; the śrī-bīja has been stated there. The next is as follows: "Kṣataja and Vyomavaktra, adorned with Caṇḍogrā, the moon-dot and the rest — moist, fierce and elemental — is declared the first bīja." Kṣataja is ra, Vyomavaktra is ha, Caṇḍogrā is ī, "adorned with the moon-dot and the rest" means adorned with dot and nāda — the māyā-bīja. "Krodhīśa, Raktaga, adorned with Dhūmrabhairavī, the moon-dot and the rest — the bīja of her who dwells in the cremation ground, Kāla's own, the flesh-eater." Krodhīśa is ka, Raktaga is ra, Dhūmrabhairavī is ī; with dot and nāda joined, the Kālī-bīja. "Taking up Ugrabhairavī joined with nāda and dot — the elemental vāgbhava-bīja, increasing prosperity and intelligence." Ugrabhairavī is ai; hence the vāgbhava-bīja. "Phaṭ is the well-known weapon; Kālī, fire, the pervader and the goad; the head, svāhā, the double ṭha, the wife of fire, the beloved of the flame." "Brahmā standing on Indrāsana, she, Trimūrti and Manmatha; Vyomāsya rich with Kālavaktra, joined with the armour, the dot and the moon." By this the kāma-bīja and the kūrca-bīja. "Śūnya mounted on Kṣataja, adorned with Caṇḍabhairavī, with dot and moon on its head — this is declared the jyotir-mantra." Śūnya is ha, Kṣataja is ra, Caṇḍabhairavī is ai. "The unsurpassed treasury of mantras taught by the primal god, to be kept utterly hidden from other mouths — that I have declared here: the analysis of the mantra-treasury of the Yakṣaḍāmara mantra, which the lord of wrath spoke to the great-souled Bhairava." So ends the quotation. Therefore, of the praṇava, the śrī-bīja, māyā, the Kālī-bīja, the vāgbhava, the weapon, the wife of fire, the kāma- and kūrca-bījas and the jyotir-mantra, whichever stands in a given mantra is declared its mouth. Where two or three of these bījas stand together, by the rule just stated the earlier of them is taken.
