Chapter Ten·The Eyes and Signs of Mantras·Verses 7–2
The appendix closes with three topics that continue the Yakṣaḍāmara's teaching. First the rule for the eyes: when a bīja is present all the root letters are "red-mouthed"; visarga and the dot, Caṇḍī and Vikalā, are the right and left eyes when they do not stand in the middle of the mantra; when the mouth- and eye-bījas are lacking, Vidyut (a) is the eye, Manoharī (svāhā) the mouth, Daṇḍī (the anusvāra) the heart, and the breath is also the vowel-powers — secrets. Cintāmaṇi and Nṛsiṃha are not weighed here, for they carry ear, mouth, eye and heart together. Where a mantra is a bare bīja, the whole of it is eye; where Caṇḍī comes first and Vikalā after, there is the eye, and the mouth is sprinkled with blood, that is, ra. In a mantra without a repha the root letter is the mouth and Vidyut the eye when Caṇḍī and Vikalā are absent; then Garjinī (i) and Dhūmrabhairavī (ī) serve as eyes when dot and visarga are wanting, and Yakṣeśvara (ha) is the mouth; Sugrīva (ra) doubled is the ear, hūṃ, Śūnya (ha) and Vikalā the eyes, Gaurī (i) and Pārvatī (ī) in their absence, and when all are absent the letter a stands for each. Vidyut alone is the heart, eye and breath in a mantra without them. Then the necessity of this knowledge — without it japa, homa and ritual have no ground; knowing a mantra's ear, mouth, heart and eye brings immediate liberation and every success, and the sādhaka becomes Śiva himself, while taking a mantra without it brings poverty, misfortune, hell, loss of fame, misery, defeat and grief. Second the sixteen vowel-powers: Bhīṣaṇā for a, Tāmasī for ā, Garjinī for i, Śūlinī for ī, Kālavaktrā for u, Vidārī for ū, Mahāraudrī for ṛ, Kālikā for ṝ, Saṃhāriṇī for ḷ, Rudracaṇḍā for ḹ, Ūrdhvakeśī for e, Koṭarākṣī for ai, Jvālāsyā for o, Ḍākinī for au, Akrūrā for aṃ and Kapālinī for aḥ — whichever of these are used in a mantra are its heart; so, knowing the ear and the rest in order, one should perform the puraścaraṇa, having taken the mantra from the guru and learned also its kīlaka. Third the sign of the limbs from the Jñānatantra: on Kailāsa Pārvatī asks Śiva, having learned the revelation of mantras, their inner limbs, divisions, kīlakas and the lifting of curses, to explain the "sign of the limbs", threatening to give up her life if he will not; Śiva praises the question, says he had withheld it because of women's fickleness, forbids its disclosure, and teaches it: a one-lettered mantra is imagined as the whole body; a three-lettered one to the armpits, hips and feet; four letters to the cheeks, arms, navel and feet; five to the neck, arms, belly, thighs and feet; six to the face, throat, arms, heart, thighs and feet; seven to the face, throat, arms, back, belly, thighs and feet; eight to the face, chin, throat, arms, back, belly, knees and feet; nine to the nose, face, neck, arms, belly, head, breast, thighs and feet; ten to the head, chin, ears, neck, arms, back, breast, belly, thighs and feet; and for mantras of eleven letters and more the outer limbs are imagined likewise before japa. The rest is left unsaid for fear of swelling the book; and with "the appendix is complete" the work ends.

Now the rule for the eyes. The same text says: "When a bīja is present all the root letters are red-mouthed; the vowels are the heart. Caṇḍī and Vikalā are the right and left eyes if they are not in the middle. In the absence of a bīja, Vidyut of the mantra is the eye, Manoharī the mouth; the root letter is the heart, Daṇḍī, and the breath is also the vowel-powers." "When a bīja is present, red-mouthed" — all the root letters, the śrī-bīja and the rest, become red-mouthed when a bīja, that is, when the mantra itself, is present. "Caṇḍī and Vikalā, if not in the middle" — if visarga and the dot do not stand in the middle of the mantra, they are its right and left eyes. "In the absence of a bīja" — in the absence of the bījas that form the mouth and eyes. "Vidyut of the mantra is the eye" — the eye of the mantra; Vidyut is the letter a. "Manoharī is the mouth" — since it is said that the wife of fire is the root letter; "the heart is Daṇḍī" — the anusvāra; "the breath is also the vowel-powers" — Daṇḍī and the vowel-powers are the heart and breath: these are secrets. Cintāmaṇi and Nṛsiṃha are not weighed here. And so: "Those called Cintāmaṇi and Nṛsiṃha carry ear, mouth, eye and heart together. Where the mantra is a bīja letter, the whole of it is eye. Where the chief one comes first and Vikalā is seen coming after, there one should know the eye, and the mouth sprinkled with blood." Here "where the mantra is a bīja letter" means where the mantra is the bare śrī-bīja or the like; "the chief one first, coming after" means where Caṇḍī is seen first and Vikalā itself after, there one should know the eye; and "the mouth sprinkled with blood" means ra. For a mantra without a repha, the same text says the root letter is the mouth: "In a mantra without blood the root letter is declared the mouth; Vidyut is taught as the eye in one without Caṇḍī and Vikalā." And further: "In their absence Garjinī and Dhūmrabhairavī are declared the two eyes." Garjinī is the third vowel, Dhūmabhairavī the fourth; these two also are the eyes when dot and visarga are absent. "Where Yakṣeśvara stands in a mantra, that itself is chiefly the mouth; in the absence of Caṇḍikā, here Vidyut is eye, heart and wine." The same text says: "Sugrīva doubled is the ear; hūṃ, Śūnya and Vikalā are the eyes; and in the absence of Vikalā, Gaurī and Pārvatī." Yakṣeśvara is ha, Caṇḍikā is visarga, Vidyut is a, Sugrīva is ra, Śūnya is ha, Vikalā is the double dot, Gaurī the third vowel, Pārvatī the fourth. When all are absent, the letter a alone is to be known in each of those roles. And so: "Vidyut alone is said to be heart and eye in one without heart, mouth and breath." By this the heart, eye and breath are Vidyut alone, in view of the statement "the breath is also the vowel-powers". Here ends the knowledge of the ear and the rest.

The same text states that this knowledge is indispensable: without this knowledge japa, homa and ritual have no ground. And: "From knowing a mantra's ear, mouth, heart and eye comes liberation at once; success of every kind comes; that sādhaka is Śiva himself. Without knowledge of the ear and the rest, from the mere taking of a mantra come poverty, misfortune, falling into hell and loss of fame; one is wretched, very miserable, defeated, harassed by enemies, grieving. So with mind set on it one should surely make out the ear and the rest in a mantra." Such things are to be known.

Now the vowel-powers. In the same text: in the letter a, Bhīṣaṇā, named Kīrti and Vidyujjihvā — a. In ā, Tāmasī, Kālarātri, Ugrā, Kālabhairavī — ā. In i, Garjinī, Caṇḍā, Rudrabhayaṅkarī — i. In ī, Śūlinī, known as Caṇḍogrā and Dhūmrabhairavī — ī. In u, the one called Kālavaktrā, Pracaṇḍā, Caṇḍavallabhā — u. In ū, Vidārī, Tālajaṅghā, Kapālinī — ū. In ṛ, Mahāraudrī, Jvālinī, also Yoginī — ṛ. In ṝ, the goddess Kālikā, Pitṛkālī, Bhayaṅkarī — ṝ. In ḷ, Saṃhāriṇī, Meghanādā, Ugrahāsinī — ḷ. In ḹ, Rudracaṇḍā, Kālajihvā, Karālinī — ḹ. In e, Ūrdhvakeśī, Cāmuṇḍā, Nādinī — e. In ai, Koṭarākṣī, Māninī, Uttamabhairavī — ai. In o, Jvālāsyā, Bhīmākṣī, Muṇḍamālinī — o. In au, Ḍākinī, Siṃhanādinī, Caṇḍabhairavī — au. In aṃ, the one called Akrūrā, Vikārī, Rudraḍākinī — aṃ. In the last, Kapālinī, Yāmyā, Caṇḍikā, the two rings; in the visarga the anusvāra with ā; these kalās are the vowel-powers — aḥ. The secret meaning is that whichever of these are used in a given mantra, those very ones are to be regarded as its heart. Thus, knowing in order a mantra's ear and the rest, one should perform the puraścaraṇa. And so: "Having taken the mantra at the guru's side, devoted to the guru, having carefully learned the mantra's ear, mouth, heart, eye and breath, and knowing the mantra and its kīlaka, one should perform the preliminary rite of the mantra; having completed the puraścaraṇa one should undertake the vīra-siddhi."
Now the sign of the limbs of mantras. In the Jñānatantra: on the lovely peak of Kailāsa, frequented by hosts of gandharvas, the mountain's daughter, seated on Sthāṇu's breast, asked the god. Pārvatī said: O lord of Gaṇeśa, Nandi and the moon, lord of beings, my lord — the revelation of the mantras of many tantras, their inner limbs, their divisions, their kīlakas and the lifting of curses: by your grace, lord, I have learned their truth, no doubt of it. In the various tantras, O lord of gods, the vidyā is declared to be made of letters. Now I wish to hear the settling of the name of the limbs of mantras; the so-called mantra-sign has been hinted to me many times. In this lonely place, if you have affection for me, tell it, Mahādeva; there is no room for hesitation. If not, I say truly, today, setting it before you, I shall give up my life in front of you — truly, truly, there is no doubt. Īśvara said: Well asked, O good one, whatever stands in my mind. Goddess, because of women's fickleness I did not tell it to you before, beloved; now, seeing your steadiness, I tell it to you, sinless one. It is never to be disclosed, great goddess Pārvatī; if this great truth is disclosed your siddhis perish. I say again, great goddess: most certainly it is not to be told. Without japa, homa or worship, O compassionate one, by the mere knowledge of it mantra-success arises. Whoever repeats the king of mantras without knowing the mantra-sign — even by a hundred lakh repetitions mantra-success does not come to him. Therefore the imagining of the limbs is to be learned with every effort. Out of great regard for you, virtuous one, and wishing the good of the worlds, I shall tell it; hear, O queen of gods, the great essence of essences. In a one-lettered great mantra one should imagine the whole body-form, O great queen, and think of nothing else. The first letter reaches to the roots of the arms, the second to the hips, the third to the roots of the feet — so should one think in order. In four-lettered mantras the first reaches to the cheeks, the second to the arms, the third to the navel, and then the fourth, O goddess, one should think of as reaching to the feet.

In a five-lettered mantra one should arrange it in five parts: the first to the neck, O goddess, the second to the arms, the third to the belly, the fourth to the thighs, and the fifth, O goddess, surely to the feet, no doubt of it. In a six-lettered mantra the first reaches to the face, the second to the throat, the third to the arms, the fourth to the heart, the fifth to the thighs, and the sixth letter to the feet — so one should think in order. In a seven-lettered mantra the first reaches to the face, the second to the throat, the third to the arms, the fourth to the back, the fifth to the belly, the sixth letter to the thighs and the seventh to the feet. In an eight-lettered great mantra the first reaches to the face, the second to the chin, the third to the throat, the fourth to the arms, the fifth to the back, the sixth letter to the belly, the seventh to the knees and the eighth to the feet — in the imagined limb too, no doubt of it. In a nine-lettered mantra the first reaches to the nose, the second to the face, the third to the neck, the fourth to the arms, the fifth to the belly, the sixth is to be known as the head, the seventh reaches to the breast, the eighth to the thighs and the ninth to the feet. In a ten-lettered mantra the first reaches to the head, the second to the chin, the third is the pair of ears, the fourth the neck, the fifth the pair of arms, the sixth is to be known as the back, the seventh the round of the breast, the eighth reaches to the belly, the ninth to the thighs, and to the feet the ninth is to be known — such is the imagining of a mantra's limbs. In the same way, having imagined the outer limbs of mantras of eleven letters and more, one should do the japa of the mantra and the rest. The rest is not stated for fear of swelling the book.
