Purnima Sadhana: What to Do on the Full-Moon Tithi

Whatever you already recite — a mantra, a chalisa, a stuti, a stotra — recite the maximum of it on Purnima, Amavasya and grahan kaal. The monthly Purnima is named as a day on which special anushthan and Mantra Japa should be done even by someone who attempts nothing larger all year.

Deepdaan is not to be skipped on any divine tithi — do it in Pradosha kaal or nisha kaal. On Purnima night light at least sixteen lamps of cow ghee, sixteen being the number of Bhagwati's kalas, as in shodashopachar. Where cow ghee is not possible, til oil lamps serve.

Where a household quarrels over everything, down to the lighting of a lamp, the Bhairav deepdaan vidhi should certainly be done — on Ashtami as the standing rule, and additionally on any Parva Kala, Purnima and Amavasya included.

A tithi-selection principle, not merely a preference. Gentle and nourishing mantras yield greatly increased effect japped in Shukla Paksha around the Purnima tithi; mantras meant to confer ugrata belong to Krishna Paksha, Ashtami through Chaturdashi. For those who cannot sponsor a full Chandi Yag: on both Purnima and Amavasya, offer aahuti with the mantras of your own pratishthit devata, matching the dravya to the difficulty — kheer or ghee with Batuk Bhairav where there is trouble in progeny, other offerings where the trouble is financial.

Havan using nourishing samagri is performed on the Purnima day, and is called excellent above all on Sharad Purnima. It pairs there with Lakshmi practice — her Mala Mantra, the Dhanada Lakshmi Kavach, her jap, or the havan itself.

Choose one TithiA lunar calendar day — some idols (like a Shivling) need daily bathing regardless, while others only need it on their dedicated weekly day or tithi. and hold it for five to six months. For Bhagwati: Ashtami, Navami, Chaturdashi, Purnima or Amavasya. For Shiva: Panchami, Dwadashi, Trayodashi, Chaturdashi, Amavasya or Purnima. For Ganapati: Chaturthi or Chaturdashi. On Sankranti, any of them.

Prescribed as the remedy for a mind that will not settle into one sadhana. Keep your daily Shiva mantra jap running without a break, and bind the Saptashati paath to a fixed tithi — Ashtami or Chaturdashi, or Purnima or Amavasya. Being bound to a niyam is what steadies the practice; without it the mind keeps moving between one thing and another.

Perform one abhishek with water mixed with divine fragrant substances, on Ekadashi or on Purnima as you prefer. Permitted for Bhagwati's swaroops and for Bhagwan Narayan — but haridra is not offered to Mahadev, so he is never bathed with haridra water. Where time is short, the Annapurna or Shakambhari sadhana can be completed in a single day on the Purnima tithi of any month. The shape given is concrete: jap as much as you are able — around 5,000 — then its dashansh Havan, TarpanaA libation offering of water or other substances made to a deity or ancestor, typically performed alongside Havan and Marjan., marjan, and the feeding of one kanya, whose meal, garments and shringar may instead be donated at the temple.

Called an extremely necessary sadhana for a householder. In Navratri it runs Pratipada to Ashtami; in any other month, begin it from the Purnima tithi. Observance of brahmacharya is named as the first requirement for any sadhaka taking it up.

Begin from Margashirsha Purnima, which is Dattatreya Jayanti — or from the Purnima tithi of any month. A vigraha under six inches, or the Dattatreya yantra, may be established at home for it.

The standing pattern for Bhagwan Datta, whatever else you hold: special pujan on Thursday, and deepdaan on Purnima and at maha-parva kaal. Stated as applying to sadhakas at every level, the complete beginner included.

Asked when a kavach that has been obtained should first be worn: any time in Sawan, any time during Gupt Navratri, or on Purnima — the point of the answer being that suitable time is not scarce.

If your household has always done Kuldevi pujan on Purnima, continue on Purnima — the inherited tithi governs, and the ordinary Saptami pujan is done separately. Those with no known family tithi observe Kuldevi Saptami instead.

Where love in a family has turned into constant kalah-klesh and havan or pujan attempted so far has not settled it: on Purnima or Amavasya, every member of the household makes kheer and feeds it to Gau Mata by their own hand, with real affection — at your own doorstep if possible, but the animal fed should not be one you own. Paired, if you can manage it, with a collective paath of Bhagavad Gita chapter 7, 9 or 11 — the effect is said to show from the first day.

Purnima vrat sits naturally alongside Ashtami and Pradosh vrat in a sadhaka's routine. Asked by someone already keeping those three whether more could be added, the reply was that the remaining tithis may be kept too — each one has its own devata, from Pratipada for Prajapati through to the rest.

On the great Purnimas — Kartik above all — bathe before sunrise in the Ganga or any divine river or sarovar. The punya of the entire month is said to be gathered into those few days. Where a Kumbh niyam is taken from Paush Purnima, daily snan is named the first rule and the one that must not lapse.

Daan belongs to the Purnima observance: anna, vastra and dakshina, given according to your capacity to whoever actually guides you — those who conduct your pujan at Navratri, at Ekadashi, at the parva kaals. The caution is attached directly to it: never give daan to an unworthy or unfit recipient.
