Who should do the Dattatreya ekakshari mantra vidhan?
The first anushthan for a sadhak without a guru
The speaker says every sadhak should do the vidhan of the Ekakshari mantra of Bhagavan Dattatreya, and especially those who have not obtained a Guru and have not received a mantra from the mouth of a physical guru. Such people, he says, step onto the sadhana path and go straight to the sadhana of Bhairav, Kali, Durga and the Mahashaktis; instead their first sadhana should be Dattatreya, the samyak form of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh, accepted as guru, and this ekakshari vidhan should certainly be done before walking the path.
The speaker opens by saying that the vidhan of the Ekakshari mantra of Bhagavan Dattatreya should be done by every SadhakOne who undertakes a sadhana; the practitioner as distinct from the ordinary worshipper., and in particular by a certain kind of person. That person is one who has not obtained a Guru — who has not received a mantra from the mouth of any physical guru. Such people, he says, when they set out on the sadhana path, go directly to the sadhana of Bhairav ji, Kali ji, Durga ji, the Mahashaktis, as their very first sadhana. They should instead go first to Bhagavan Dattatreya, the samyak swaroop of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh, accept him in the guru form, and certainly do the vidhan of his ekakshari mantra. He calls it a supreme boon for all devotees and all Sanatanis, especially those who want to walk the sadhana path and for some reason have not found a guru.
Why does worshipping Dattatreya count as worshipping all gurus?
The Guru Brahma shloka seen in his form
The speaker says Bhagavan Dattatreya is worshipped in some form, in the guru form, in every panth and sampradaya of Sanatan culture, so serving and worshipping him worships all gurus. The shloka "गुरुर्ब्रह्मा गुरुर्विष्णुः गुरुर्देवो महेश्वरः, गुरुः साक्षात् परब्रह्म तस्मै श्री गुरवे नमः" is, he says, seen directly in his form, since Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh are visible in him and he is saakshat Parabrahma, a Mahamuni. He therefore tells the listener to accept him as guru with faith and shraddha.
The speaker explains why the first sadhana goes to Dattatreya. In Sanatan culture, he says, however many different panths and sampradayas have formed, Bhagavan Dattatreya is worshipped in all of them in some form or other — in the Guru form. So if we do his seva and puja, the puja of all gurus is done. He points to the mantra people recite: गुरुर्ब्रह्मा गुरुर्विष्णुः गुरुर्देवो महेश्वरः, गुरुः साक्षात् परब्रह्म तस्मै श्री गुरवे नमः. Looking at Bhagavan Dattatreya, he says, this whole shloka is seen dedicated to him directly, because in his very form all three are visible — Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh — and he is saakshat Parabrahma, a Mahamuni. For him, therefore, this is the greatest mantra, and he is guru-swaroop. So accept him in the guru form. Later in the video he repeats the point: first keep faith and shraddha in him and accept him as guru; the guru shloka the listener has been reading since childhood is seen in full, directly, in his form.
Special case: a guru obtained but not taking the sadhak forward
The Datta ekakshari vidhan still applies
The speaker says that even if a Guru has been obtained but for some reason is unable to take the sadhak forward on the sadhana path, or the sadhak is not satisfied, that person too should do this Ekakshari mantra vidhan of Bhagavan Datta. Otherwise, for one who has no guru at all and wants to walk the path, the Dev Deeksha vidhan comes first.
Beyond the sadhak without a guru, the speaker gives a second case. Suppose you have obtained a Guru, but for some reason he is not able to take you forward on the sadhana path, or you are not being satisfied. Even then, he says, you should do this vidhan of the Ekakshari mantra of Bhagavan Datta that he is describing in this video. Otherwise — if you have no guru and want to walk the sadhana path — then first of all you should do the Dev Deeksha vidhan, the link to which he says is in the video description.
Dev deeksha before the Dattatreya ekakshari anushthan
Accept Datta as sadguru first, on a Purnima or parva
The speaker says that before walking the sadhana path one should first do the Dev Deeksha vidhan before Bhagavan Dattatreya, on any auspicious parva kaal or on a Poornima day, mentally surrendering before him and accepting him as Sadguru and param guru. Only after that should the ekakshari mantra anushthan be taken up in one's life.
The speaker sets the order. On any auspicious parva kaal, or on the day of Poornima, first of all do the Dev Deeksha vidhan in front of Bhagavan Dattatreya. He says the link to that vidhan is placed in the description of this video. In it one becomes mentally surrendered before him and accepts him as SadguruThe true Guru — not merely one who initiates, but one through whom the practice actually ripens., as param guru. After that, he says, do this anushthan of his ekakshari mantra in your life — before walking on the sadhana path.
Nature of the Dattatreya ekakshari beej mantra
His smallest form, holding all his shaktis
The speaker says this mantra is the Bija Mantra mantra of the complete form of Bhagavan Dattatreya — just as Kali, Durga and every principal Mahashakti has a beej mantra, so does the param guru swaroop Bhagavan Datta. A beej, he explains, is like a seed from which a tree grows and bears many fruits: this is Datta's smallest form, yet all his shaktis are contained in it. The beej itself is not spoken in the video; he says the full japa vidhi is in a PDF linked in the description.
This mantra, the speaker says, is the Bija Mantra mantra of the complete form of Bhagavan Dattatreya. As we know, Kali ji has a beej mantra, Durga ji has a beej mantra, and every principal MahashaktiThe Great Power — distinguished by the speaker from ordinary Shakti sadhana. has its beej mantra. In the same way the param guru swaroop, the param divya swaroop Bhagavan Datta has this beej mantra. The meaning of beej, he explains, is that from one seed — if one speaks of the whole world — a tree will grow, and on that tree many fruits will come. In just the same way this is the smallest form of Bhagavan Datta, but all his shaktis are contained within it. He does not pronounce the beej anywhere in the video. He says the complete japa vidhi is in a PDF in the video description, to be downloaded and printed, and the mantra is to be held as a guru mantra and never spoken aloud.
Datta's promise to the sadhak, and objections to doing the vidhan oneself
Sharanagati instead of other people's doubts
The speaker says Bhagavan Datta himself declares that whoever worships him in whatever bhava and manner, he comes at once and fulfils all that person's wishes. So the vidhan should be done for one's own welfare without negative thoughts and without heeding very learned people who say one cannot do such a vidhan by oneself; going into others' talk, he says, one never advances on one's path of welfare. Leave all that, accept Bhagavan's sharanagati and surrender to him. The proof, he says, has been given in earlier Dattatreya videos and lives on the channel, and hearing them removes every doubt.
Bhagavan Datta himself says, the speaker reports: whoever worships me in whatever bhava and in whatever way, I become present at once and fulfil all his wishes. Therefore, he says, without any negative thought in the mind, and without listening to some very learned person's words that no, you cannot do this vidhan by yourself, this vidhan should be done for one's own welfare. If you go into other people's talk, then hearing many things you will never be able to move forward on your path of welfare. So leave all such talk, accept the sharanagati of Bhagavan and surrender to him. The proof of this, he says, has been given in earlier videos: search the channel for Dattatreya and a whole list appears, including live sessions where he was discussed at length; listen to each one and all doubts will go. First of all, then, keep faith and shraddha in him and accept him in the guru form.
Start day, dress, asana and direction for the Datta ekakshari japa
Any Purnima, all yellow, facing Girnar or north, east, west
The speaker says to begin the sadhana from the Poornima tithi of any month. Keep yellow cloth and a yellow asana, or an asana of Kusha. Face north, east or west, or face the direction in which Girnar parvat in Gujarat lies from your home. Since Datta is Parabrahma and present everywhere any direction works, but grihasthas should not face south at home in sadhana, shanti or Paushtik Karma; apart from that, east, west and north are allowed.
When you want to walk the sadhana path and take up the upasana of Bhagavan Datta's form, and want to begin with the ekakshari mantra, the speaker says, start this sadhana from the Poornima tithi of any month. Keep yellow cloth and a yellow asana; the asana may also be of KushaThe sacred grass used for seats, rings and purificatory sprinkling; treated as spiritually insulating.. Direction: north, east or west, any of these. You may also face the direction in which the region of GirnarThe mountain in Saurashtra held to be the abiding seat of Dattatreya. parvat — Girnar is in Gujarat — lies from your place of residence, and do the japa that way. He adds that Bhagavan Datta is present everywhere, because he is saakshat Parabrahma Parameshwar, so you can face any direction. But grihasthas should not face south at home in sadhana, shanti and Paushtik Karma. Apart from that, east, west and north are the directions in which the sadhana may be done.
Mala, gomukhi and chandan for the Datta ekakshari japa
Rudraksha in yellow thread, yellow gomukhi, yellow chandan or kesar
The speaker says the Mala for this japa is of Rudraksha, strung in yellow thread, and the Gomukhi is to be yellow too. On the forehead wear yellow cloth and a lepan of yellow Chandan; do not apply red chandan at the start of this sadhana. As an alternative, a lepan of Kesar may be used.
For the mala, the speaker says, take RudrakshaA sacred seed strung into rosaries and worn during shiva worship.. The rudraksha Mala should be strung in yellow thread. The GomukhiA cloth rosary bag, shaped like a cow's face, used to conceal the hand and rosary while chanting mantras in public. in this is also to be kept yellow. On the forehead, a yellow cloth and a lepan of yellow ChandanSandalwood paste, offered and applied in worship for its cooling, purifying quality. — a lepan of pila chandan. A lepan of red chandan is not to be done in this sadhana at the beginning. Alternatively, he says, you may also apply a lepan of KesarSaffron, used in ashtagandha inks and in offerings to the Goddess..
First-day Datta pujan together with the wife
For a married sadhak, if possible
The speaker says that if the sadhak is married, then on the first day, whenever the pujan is done, he should keep in mind to do the pujan of Bhagavan Datta together with his dharmapatni, certainly, if it is possible.
If your marriage and so on has taken place, the speaker says, then on the first day, whenever you do the pujan, keep this in mind: if it is possible, certainly do the pujan of Bhagavan Datta together with your dharmapatni. He says nothing further about her role during the japa days; the instruction is for the first-day pujan.
Sadhana cloth, asana, mala and gomukhi reserved for the sadhak alone
Not for daily wear, not touched by anyone else
The speaker says the cloth used in this sadhana is not to be worn in daily life, only in pujan and paath. No other person should use those clothes or the asana, and no other person should touch the Mala or the Gomukhi; the sadhak alone uses all of them.
Two lamps and the first-day pujan in the Datta ekakshari anushthan
Ghee lamps for Dattatreya and Bhagavati Anagha Lakshmi
The speaker says a ghee lamp is best in this sadhana, and every person should light two: one in the name of Bhagavan Dattatreya and the second in the name of his mahashakti, Bhagavati Anagha Lakshmi. The pujan is done at the beginning, on the first day; for it he points to the general shodashopachar pujan vidhi given in his dev deeksha video, linked in the description. After that the japa begins.
The DeepakThe lamp lit for worship, of ghee or oil according to the vidhi. in this, the speaker says, is best of ghee — that will be uttam, the very best. Two lamps should be lit by every person: one in the name of Bhagavan Dattatreya ji, and the second in the name of his mahashakti, Bhagavati Anagha Lakshmi. Two lamps are to be kindled by each person. The pujan is done at the beginning. For the short pujan vidhi he points to the links in the description — the video on how to take Dev Deeksha oneself — where the general shodashopachar pujan vidhi is given; by that vidhi you can do Bhagavan's pujan on the first day. After that, he says, you are to begin the japa.
Japa method of the Datta ekakshari: viniyoga, nyasa, the bare beej
No pranav before it, no namah after
The speaker says the full japa vidhi is a PDF in the video description, to be downloaded and printed. Each sitting begins with Viniyoga and Nyasa, then the Japa of the Ekakshari mantra. Neither Pranav nor namah is to be attached: only the Bija Mantra as it is, and its japa is to be done in the greatest possible quantity.
To begin the Japa, the speaker says, a PDF of the complete japa vidhi will be in the description of this video; download it and get a printout. Viniyoga and Nyasa: you will do the viniyoga, do the nyasa, and thereafter do the japa of the Ekakshari mantra. Neither Pranav is to be attached in this, nor namah. Whatever the Bija Mantra mantra is, japa is to be done of that beej mantra alone, in the greatest possible quantity.
108 malas a day from Purnima to Purnima, and when to sit
Dawn is best; 54 and 54 in two sittings allowed
The speaker prescribes 108 malas of the Ekakshari every day from one Poornima to the next. The time may be early morning at dawn, evening, or night, but japa at nine or ten o'clock gives less effect, so try for dawn. The 108 may also be split into two sittings, 54 in the morning and 54 in the evening. Done this way, he says, by Datta's grace nothing will be lacking in material or spiritual life, and his guidance and help will keep coming, directly or indirectly, at the right time.
If from one Poornima to the next Purnima you do 108 malas of Japa every day, the speaker says, that is the anushthan. The time you may keep in the morning, right at dawn; or you can do the sadhana at night, or in the evening. But keep in mind that if you do the sadhana at nine or ten o'clock the effect will be less; so try to do it at dawn. You may also combine two sittings to make 108 malas: 54 malas in the morning and 54 in the evening — 54 and 54, twice, is also allowed. If you do 108 malas daily from one Purnima to the next, then by the grace of Bhagavan Datta there will be no lack in your material life nor in your spiritual life, and at the right time his guidance and his help will certainly keep reaching you, directly or indirectly. So first of all, he says, everyone should do this sadhana.
Bhog, water and leaves in the Datta ekakshari anushthan
Anything sweet; the sadhak drinks the offered water
Asked what Bhog to offer, the speaker says any sweet item — chhuhara, kishmish, Mishri. After offering, the sadhak may eat it and feed it to the household. The water kept with the bhog is to be drunk by the sadhak himself. Bilva and Tulsi leaf may both be offered to Bhagavan.
The question of which BhogThe food offering placed before a deity before anyone in the household eats. to offer will come up, the speaker says. In bhog you may offer any sweet item — chhuhara, kishmish, MishriCrystallised sugar, offered as naivedya.; all of these are to be offered. After offering the bhog you may eat it yourself and also feed it to the people of the house. The water that is offered — that is, the water kept with the bhog — you will drink yourself. BilvaThe sacred Bael tree associated with Lord Shiva — sadhana is undertaken beneath it, its wood is used as fuel for Havan offerings of ghee and sesame seeds during a release ritual, and its trifoliate leaf (Bilvapatra) is the offering proper to Him. may also be offered to Bhagavan, and Tulsi leaf too; you may offer both of them.
Feeding the cow and dogs during the Datta sadhana
Kamadhenu and the four dogs who walk with Datta
The speaker says that as long as the japa and the sadhana period run — and in fact always in life — a cow must be fed bhog every day, because Bhagavan Datta always walks with the cow, Gau Mata Kamadhenu, and is present with her, so her seva is done. Four dogs stay with Datta, so dogs too must be fed during this time. With these acts alongside the japa, he says, Datta's boundless grace is certainly obtained.
One more special thing to keep in mind, the speaker says: as long as the japa runs, as long as the sadhana period lasts — though this should always be followed in life — bhog must be fed to a cow every day. Bhagavan Datta always walks with the cow. So Gau Mata Kamadhenu, with her Bhagavan Datta is present; let her seva be done. Four dogs stay with Bhagavan Datta, so at this time also keep in mind that dogs must certainly be given food. If you do this japa together with all these acts, he says, his boundless grace is certainly obtained.
Closing havan of the Datta ekakshari anushthan
At least 11 malas, the beej in the mind and only swaha aloud
The speaker says that when the Purnima-to-Purnima japa is complete, on the last day do a Havan as well if possible — at least 11 malas. In it only the Bija Mantra is uttered, and then Swaha; the beej is said in the mind, not with the mouth, and only the swaha is spoken as each Ahuti is given. This is how the japa is completed, and its samarpan is to be kept on being made to Bhagavan Datta.
After the japa is complete, the speaker says, if possible then on the last day — that is, when you have done the japa from Purnima to Purnima — do a Havan as well. It will be a havan of at least 11 malas. In it you will utter only the Bija Mantra and say SwahaThe closing utterance for an oblation offered into fire for the devas, as distinct from Swadha, used for the pitrs.. The utterance is not to be made with the mouth; it is to be made in the mind. When you offer the Ahuti too, uttering the beej in the mind, you say only swaha and give the oblation. In this manner the japa is to be completed, and the samarpan of the japa is to be kept on being made to Bhagavan Datta.
The Datta ekakshari as a guru mantra: never spoken aloud, never told
Lips may move; no one should hear it
The speaker says that because this mantra is being held in the Guru form, its Japa is never done by pronouncing it aloud. The lips may move and it may be said very softly, but no one should be able to hear it. It is a guru mantra, so it is to be told to no one and never spoken — in the japa, and in the havan ahutis where only swaha is voiced.
Keep this in mind, the speaker says: you are holding this mantra in the Guru form, so you will never do its Japa by pronouncing it. Japa is not to be done by speaking it. You may move the lips, you may say it very slowly and softly, but it should not be audible to anyone. It is a guru mantra, so it is not to be told to anyone; therefore it is never to be spoken. The same holds in the havan: the beej is uttered in the mind and only SwahaThe closing utterance for an oblation offered into fire for the devas, as distinct from Swadha, used for the pitrs. is said aloud with the ahuti.
Bhojpatra yantra and kavach prayoga with the Datta ekakshari
Two yantras: one worn, one kept by Datta, exchanged at the close
The speaker adds an optional prayoga he calls excellent: on two Bhojpatra draw the Yantra shown in his diksha video — two triangles opposite each other with the Datta Ekakshari beej written in the centre — and do its usual Prana Pratishtha if you know the full vidhi. Keep both by Bhagavan Datta on the first day; after that day's japa, seal one into a copper or silver Kavach on a yellow thread and wear it while the japa continues. On the 30th day, the next Purnima, after japa, havan and samarpan, put the yantra left by Bhagavan into a fresh kavach and wear it, and give the first kavach Visarjan in a river. Both the kavach and the mantra, he says, are then siddha.
If you do one more prayoga along with this, the speaker says, it is very excellent. He has described it in the diksha vidhan video but repeats it here. Take two BhojpatraBirch bark, used to write a mantra or a person's name with a pomegranate-twig pen and red sandalwood ink for Tantric applications, such as placing a name upon a Shivlinga's base for a honey Abhisheka. and draw the Yantra on them; what the yantra looks like can be seen in the diksha vidhan video. Two triangles are drawn opposite each other, and in the middle the Ekakshari beej of Bhagavan Datta is written. Its Prana Pratishtha follows the usual vidhi given there; if you know the full vidhi you may do that too. Then place them near Bhagavan Datta and complete the first day's japa. After that, put one of the yantras into any Kavach, copper or silver, on a yellow thread, and wear it around the neck; keep doing the japa. When 30 days are complete — the next Purnima — after you have done the japa, the havan and the samarpan that day, take the yantra you had left beside Bhagavan on the first day, put it into a fresh, beautiful kavach and wear it around the neck; and the kavach you had been wearing until then, take to a river and give Visarjan. In this manner, he says, both this kavach and this mantra become Siddha.
Daily japa after the Datta ekakshari anushthan and its promised fruits
Five or 11 malas a day; success in later sadhanas, doshas handled
After the anushthan, the speaker says, keep doing japa of this mantra daily as your capacity allows, five malas or 11 malas. Then spiritual progress follows, and in whatever further sadhana you take up — of Ganpati, Bhairav, Hanuman, the Mahavidyas — you will certainly succeed. No Dosha will then attach to you; and if one does, Bhagavan Datta will guide you and create some nimitt for release from it. Going into the sharan of Mahaguru Mahadatta, he says, brings progress in sadhana, in spiritual life and in material life alike.
Once the kavach and the mantra are siddha, the speaker says, in daily life you keep doing japa of this mantra regularly, according to your capacity — five malas, 11 malas. Then your spiritual progress will happen, and in whatever further sadhana you do — of Bhagavan Ganpati, of Bhairav ji, of Hanuman ji, of the Mahavidyas — you will certainly obtain success. No Dosha will attach to you thereafter. And should a dosha attach, Bhagavan Datta will guide you and create some nimitt or other for release from that dosha. In this manner, he says, going into the sharan of Bhagavan Mahaguru Mahadatta and accepting his sharanagati, you can progress in your sadhana and spiritual life, and along with it in material life.
