The Dattatreya Ekakshari Mantra Vidhan — a Purnima-to-Purnima Anushthan for the Sadhak Who Has No Guru

The speaker says the vidhan of the Ekakshari mantra of Bhagavan Dattatreya should be performed by every sadhak in particular. He has in view those people who have not obtained a guru, who have not received a mantra from the mouth of any physical guru, and who, when they walk the sadhana marga, take up the sadhana of Bhairav ji, Kali ji, Durga ji and the Mahashaktis directly. For them, he says, Bhagavan Dattatreya — the samyak form of Bhagavan Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh — should come first.

However many separate panths and sampradayas have been formed within our Sanatan culture, the speaker says, Bhagavan Dattatreya is worshipped in all of them in one form or another, and in a Guru form. Therefore, if we perform his seva and puja, the puja of all gurus is thereby accomplished. He points to the mantra we recite — Guru Brahma, Guru Vishnu, Guru Devo Maheshwara, Guru Sakshat Parabrahma Tasmai Shri Gurave Namah — and says that on looking at Bhagavan Dattatreya this entire shloka stands directly dedicated to him alone. For him, therefore, this is itself the greatest mantra: he is the guru svarupa, because in his own form all three are seen — Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh — and Parabrahma directly; he is a Mahamuni. So accept him in the guru form, the speaker says, and certainly perform the vidhan of the ekakshari mantra.

Suppose, the speaker says, that you have obtained a guru — but for some reason he is not able to carry you forward on the sadhana marga, or else you are not becoming satisfied. Even then, he says, you should perform the vidhan of the Ekakshari mantra of Bhagavan Datta that is being described today. Otherwise, if you have no guru and wish to walk the sadhana marga, the first thing you should do is the Dev Deeksha vidhan.

In any auspicious parva kaal, or on the day of Poornima, you should first perform that vidhan before Bhagavan Dattatreya — becoming mentally surrendered before him and accepting him in the form of Sadguru and Param Guru. Thereafter this anushthan of his ekakshari mantra should be performed in your life, before walking upon the sadhana marga.

This mantra, the speaker says, is the beej (Bija Mantra) of the complete form of Bhagavan Dattatreya. As we know, Kali ji has a beej mantra, Durga ji has a beej mantra, and all the principal Mahashaktis have theirs. In the same way, the Param Guru svarupa and param divya svarupa Bhagavan Datta has this one. The meaning of beej, he explains, is that from one seed a tree will be made, and on that tree many fruits will come. In just the same way this is the smallest form of Bhagavan Datta — yet all his shaktis are contained within it.

This, the speaker says, is a matter of supreme boon for all devotees and all Sanatanis, and especially for those who wish to walk the sadhana marga and for whatever reason have not been able to obtain a Guru. Bhagavan Datta himself says: whoever worships me in whatever bhava and in whatever way, I become present at once and fulfil for him all his wishes. Therefore, the speaker says, without any negative thought in the mind, and without listening to some highly learned person's words that no, you cannot perform this vidhan by yourself, this vidhan should be done for one's own welfare.

If you go into another's talk, the speaker says, then on hearing many things you will never be able to go forward on your path of welfare. So leaving all matters aside, accept Bhagavan's sharanagati and become surrendered to him. The proof of it, he says, has already been given in earlier videos related to Bhagavan Dattatreya; there are live videos too, in which much discussion was done on the subject, and listening to them will remove all doubts. So first of all, keeping faith and ShraddhaFaith and reverent trust in a deity, guru or practice — distinct from the ancestral rite spelt Shradh. in him, accept him in the guru form. Again he says that on seeing that form of his, the guru mantra you have been reciting since childhood — the shloka dedicated to the guru — appears in it directly and entirely.

When you wish to walk the sadhana marga and to perform the upasana of the form of Bhagavan Datta, and are to begin with the Ekakshari mantra, the speaker says, begin this sadhana from the Poornima tithi of any month. Keep yellow cloth and a yellow asana; the asana may also be kept of KushaThe sacred grass used for seats, rings and purificatory sprinkling; treated as spiritually insulating.. The direction may be north, east or west — you may keep it toward any of them.

Whichever direction the kshetra of Girnar Parvat falls in from your place of residence — Girnar is in Gujarat — you may also face that direction and do the Japa, the speaker says. Although, he adds, Bhagavan Datta is present in every place, because he is Parabrahma Parameshwar directly. So you may do it facing any direction whatever. But householders should not face the southern direction in the house for sadhana in shanti and paushtik karma. Apart from that, you may do sadhana facing east, west and north.

In this, the speaker says, you are to take the Mala of RudrakshaA sacred seed strung into rosaries and worn during shiva worship.. The rudraksha mala should be strung in yellow thread. The GomukhiA cloth rosary bag, shaped like a cow's face, used to conceal the hand and rosary while chanting mantras in public. too you are to keep yellow in this. On the forehead, pit vastra and a lepan of pit chandan is to be done — a lepan of yellow chandan. A lepan of rakt chandan should not be done at the beginning in this sadhana. Thereafter you may also apply a lepan of kesar.

If your marriage and so forth has taken place, the speaker says, then on the first day whenever you perform pujan, keep this in mind: if it is possible, certainly perform the pujan of Bhagavan Datta together with your dharmapatni. The cloth you will use in the sadhana is not to be used in daily life. It is to be used only in pujan-path. Along with this, keep in mind that those clothes should not be used by anyone else, that no other person should use your asana, and that no other person should touch your Mala or your GomukhiA cloth rosary bag, shaped like a cow's face, used to conceal the hand and rosary while chanting mantras in public.. Only you should use all these things.

If a lamp of ghee is lit here, the speaker says, it will be excellent — it will be the very best. Two lamps should be lit in this by every person. One in the name of Bhagavan Dattatreya ji, and the second in the name of his Mahashakti, Bhagavati Anagha Lakshmi. Two deeps are to be kindled by every person. The pujan is to be done at the beginning. Thereafter you are to begin the Japa, the speaker says. You will do the viniyoga, you will do the nyasa, and thereafter you will do the japa of the Ekakshari mantra. Neither Pranav is to be attached in this, nor namah. Whatever the beej (Bija Mantra) is, only of that beej mantra are you to do japa, in the greatest possible quantity.

If from one Poornima up to the next Purnima you complete 108 malas of Japa each day, the speaker says, then the AnushthanaAn extended ritual observance — such as 108 recitations of a scripture — carrying its own strict rules. stands. The time you may keep in the morning, right at the hour of dawn; or you may also do the sadhana at night; you may also do it in the evening. But keep in mind that if you do the sadhana at 9 or 10 o'clock, the effect obtained will be less. Therefore try to do it in the morning, at the hour of dawn.

You may also do this sadhana by combining two times and completing 108 malas, the speaker says — 54 malas in the morning, 54 malas in the evening; 54 and 54, twice, may also be done. If 108 malas of japa a day are completed from one Poornima to the next Purnima, then by the kripa of Bhagavan Datta neither will there remain any deficiency in your material life, nor in your spiritual life. In due time, guidance and his cooperation will certainly keep reaching you, in direct and indirect form. So first of all, he says, all of you should perform this sadhana.

As for which bhog is to be offered — that question will arise, the speaker says. In the bhog you may offer any sweet material: chhuhara, kishmish, mishri; the bhog of all of these is to be offered. Having offered the bhog, you may also eat it yourself, and may also feed the people of the house. The water that will be offered — that is, the water you keep along with the bhog — that water you yourself will drink. Belpatra may also be offered to Bhagavan, and Tulsi patra may also be offered; both of these you may offer.

One further special matter is to be kept in mind, the speaker says: for as long as the Japa runs, for as long as the sadhana kaal remains — indeed this should always be followed in life — bhog must certainly be fed to the cow every day. Bhagavan Datta always walks with the cow. Gau Mata Kamdhenu is present alongside him, so let her seva be done. Four dogs remain with Bhagavan Datta. At that time too, therefore, you are to keep in mind that the dogs must certainly be given food. If you do this japa along with all these acts, he says, his boundless kripa is certainly obtained by you.

After the japa is complete, the speaker says, if it is possible then on the last day — that is, when you have done the japa from Poornima to Purnima — do the Havan as well. It will be a havan of at least 11 malas. In it you will utter only the beej (Bija Mantra) and say SwahaThe closing utterance for an oblation offered into fire for the devas, as distinct from Swadha, used for the pitrs.. And the utterance too is not to be made from the mouth; it is to be made in the mind. Keep in mind that since you are holding this mantra in the guru form, you will never do the japa of this mantra by pronouncing it. Japa is not to be done by speaking. The lips may move, you may say it very slowly, but it should not be audible to anyone. It is a guru mantra, so it is to be told to no one; therefore it is never to be spoken. When you offer the ahutis too, when you do the havan, then uttering it in the mind you will say only svaha and offer the ahuti. In this manner you are to complete this japa, and to keep making samarpan of the japa to Bhagavan Datta.

One further prayoga taken up alongside this becomes most excellent, the speaker says. Although it was described in the deeksha vidhan, he states it again here. Two BhojpatraBirch bark, used to write a mantra or a person's name with a pomegranate-twig pen and red sandalwood ink for Tantric applications, such as placing a name upon a Shivlinga's base for a honey Abhisheka.s will be taken, and a Yantra will be made upon them. What the yantra is like can be seen in the deeksha vidhan video. Two triangles will be made, each opposite to the other, and in the middle the Ekakshari beej (Bija Mantra) of Bhagavan Datta will be written. There will be the vidhi of its Prana Pratishtha — the general one described there; if you know the complete vidhi, you may do that as well. Thereafter you will place it near Bhagavan Datta, and you will complete the first day's japa.

After that, the speaker says, one of the yantras is to be placed into any Kavach — whether of copper or of silver — put onto a yellow thread, and you will wear it around your neck. And you will keep doing the Japa. When your 30 days are complete, that is, when the next Poornima arrives, then on that day you will do the japa, you will do the havan, and you will make the samarpan.

Thereafter, the speaker says, the yantra you had made on the first day and left placed beside Bhagavan is again put into a beautiful Kavach and worn around the neck; and the kavach you had been wearing until then you will take to a river and give it Visarjan. In this manner this kavach and this mantra — both of them — will become siddha. After that, in daily life, you will regularly keep doing japa of this mantra according to your capacity, five malas or 11 malas. Then your spiritual progress will also occur, and in whatever further sadhana you undertake — of Bhagavan Ganpati, of Bhairav ji, of Hanuman ji, of the Mahavidyas — you will certainly obtain success in them. No Dosha will then attach to you. And should a dosha attach, Bhagavan Datta will guide you and make some instrument or another for release from that dosha. In this manner, he says, going into the refuge of Bhagavan Mahaguru Mahadatta and accepting his sharanagati, you can progress in your sadhanatmak and spiritual life and also in your material life.
