Rāma says that if Śiva's form is without qualities and beyond the reach of mind and speech, he does not know how to grasp it. Śiva gives the means: make the mind one-pointed through worship of the form with qualities, then lead it inward, from what is gross to what is fine. The body of food, in which birth, illness, old age and death live, is not the self, which is never born and never dies, and whose space does not change, as space in a pot does not. Śiva then takes Rāma through the five sheaths in turn: the sheath of food, the sheath of breath, which is dull and overcome by hunger and thirst, the sheath of mind, with its six enemies, the sheath of knowing, the proud doer and the soul of everyday life, and the sheath of bliss, the enjoyer. The subtle body is made of seventeen parts and shines with the witness's awareness as heated iron shines like fire. The body is a chariot, the intellect its charioteer, the mind the rein, and the senses the horses. As one peels a plantain tree layer by layer to reach its core, one passes the mind through the five sheaths to the self, and then sets the mind on the formless. Rāma asks why many do not turn to hearing, or think it false even after knowing, and Śiva answers that his illusion is hard to cross, and that devotion is born only after a crore of births. The chapter ends with the call to leave all duties for his refuge and offer everything to him.

Explanation

Whatever you do, whatever you eat, whatever you offer in the fire, whatever you give, whatever austerity you practise, Rāma, make it an offering to me. There is no devotion to me higher than that, O best of the Raghus.

The rule is to start from something gross and near to lead the mind to something fine, as one may first show a thirsty person a mirage and only then the real water. The form with qualities is the gross thing; the self without qualities is the fine one.
