Chapter Thirteen·The Description of Freedom·Verses 1–38
Having heard all this, Rāma asks Śiva for the mark of freedom. Śiva names five kinds: sālokya, sārūpya, sārṣṭi, sāyujya and kaivalya. One who worships him without desire but without knowledge reaches his world and enjoys it. One who knows him, and offers him everything he does, eats, gives and practises, takes a form like his and is honoured there. The highest freedom belongs to one who sees Śiva as his own self: that is Brahman alone, without a second, beyond mind and speech, and staying in one's own nature is freedom. The world is only imagined in it, like a city of gandharvas in the sky, and when ignorance perishes only the one remains. Rāma asks how this pure knowledge can arise, and Śiva gives the means: turning away from everything, going with faith and an offering to a teacher who knows Brahman, serving him, and then hearing, reflecting and deeply contemplating. Old actions perish by knowledge, new ones do not smear the knower, and the action already begun runs out by being enjoyed. Freedom has no dwelling place; it is the cutting of the knot of ignorance in the heart, and it comes wherever the body falls. Whoever reads or hears the chapter daily is freed without effort.
