Chapter Twelve·The Teaching of Worship in Full·Verses 1–41
Rāma bows and asks for the method of worship, with its place and time. Śiva answers that those who worship other gods also worship him, since the whole world is not apart from him; he gives to each in the form in which he is worshipped, by the rule or without it, and even one of bad conduct who worships him alone is to be thought good. He names four methods of worship, sampat, āropa, saṃvarga and adhyāsa, which are outward, and the inward worship, which is an unbroken flow of one thought in which one becomes one with the god. For practice he advises leaving aside travel to holy places, sitting at ease in a quiet place on a blanket or tiger skin with the body straight, and holding back the senses. The mind and senses are compared to a charioteer and his horses. He describes the form to meditate on in the heart: calm, bright as a crystal, with Umā as half his body, blue-throated, three-eyed and smeared with ash. Meditation is the fire-drill, with oneself as the lower stick and Om as the upper. Knowing 'I am that Brahman' frees one from all bonds, and the one who knows him in truth dissolves into him at the end.
