Rāma asks what devotion to Śiva is and how it arises, so that the highest freedom is reached. Śiva answers that one who studies the Veda, sacrifices and gives, offering all to him, is his devotee. He then lists the marks of those most dear to him: smearing the body with consecrated ash and worshipping with it, wearing rudrākṣa beads, reciting the five-syllable mantra, the hymns to Rudra and the Upaniṣads that speak of him. Beyond right and wrong and beyond time is the word the Vedas speak of, the syllable Om. Its four measures, a, u, m and the half measure, are tied to the worlds, the Vedas, gods, fires, metres and rivers, and all that is born and being born rests in it and is called Rudra. One who recites Om is freed. The chapter lists ways of worship that please Śiva: offering leaves, flowers and water with Om, keeping to non-violence, truth, not stealing, purity and restraint, going to his place at dusk, and worshipping at night on the eighth, eleventh and fourteenth days and on Mondays. It also describes bathing him with milk, ghee, honey and other substances while reciting the Rudra mantra, and facing the sun in meditation. Whoever sings the Sāmaveda chants or recites the Īśāvāsya before him reaches union with him.
