Chapter Sixteen·Who Is Fit for the Gītā·Verses 1–69
Rāma asks who is fit for the path of freedom Śiva has taught. Śiva says brahmins, kṣatriyas, vaiśyas, śūdras and women are all fit, whether student, householder, ascetic or one of the Pāśupata vow: whoever has devotion to the worship of Śiva. Those who hate him, his devotees, the wearers of ash and rudrākṣa, or the teacher, are not fit, and neither are those who are attached to acts outside the Veda for their fruit. Holy places such as Kāśī can give the saving Brahman at death; the restraint of hands, feet and mind gives the fruit of a holy place; meditation needs no particular birth, stage of life, place or time, and all are fit for singing the name and for meditation. Śiva praises wearing ash and rudrākṣa, reciting his name and the five-syllable mantra, and remembering him at death. Asked where he is pleased by worship, he lists images and lingams of many materials, the bilva tree and grove, and the worship of the self, which has no equal. He tells which seats bring which results, how rosaries of different materials and numbers differ, the yonimudrā posture and the hours for recitation. The chapter ends with the fruit of studying, reciting or hearing the Śiva Gītā, Śiva's vanishing, Rāma's satisfaction, and the sages thanking Sūta as their guru before they go to the evening prayer.
