Chapter Thirteen·The hymn of the Vedas·Verses
The Vedas praise Rāma as both with form and without form, the crown of kings, who killed Rāvaṇa and eased the earth's load. They say that gods, demons, nagas and men all wander in the world, held by his hard maya, and that those he looks on kindly are freed. Some, proud of their knowledge, do not honour devotion and fall from high places; those who trust him and give up all hope cross easily by his name. They praise his feet, the source of the Gaṅgā and the saver of the sage's wife, and the world as a great tree rooted in the unmanifest. They end by asking for love at his feet, free of every fault of mind, speech and deed. Then the Vedas vanish, and Śiva comes before Rāma.

Victory to you, king of kings, with form and without, whose likeness has no equal. By the strength of your arm you killed Daśakandhara and the other fierce, mighty and wicked demons. You took birth as a man to break up the load of the world and burned its hard pain. Victory to you, protector of those who bow, kind lord, joined with your Śakti: we bow to you.
Explanation

Gods, demons, nagas, men and all moving and still things are taken by your hard maya. They wander the road of the world for endless days and nights, filled with time, action and the three qualities. Those, Lord, whom you looked on with mercy were free of the three pains. Skilled at cutting the pain of the world, protect us: Rāma, we bow to you.

Some, proud of their knowledge and deluded, did not honour your devotion, which takes away the world's pain. We see them fall even from a state hard for the gods to reach. But those who have trust and have given up all hope, and became your servants, cross the world without toil by chanting your name. Lord, we remember such ones.

Your feet are worshipped by Śiva and Brahmā. The sage's wife was saved by their holy dust. From their nails came the Gangā, praised by sages, who purifies the three worlds. Marked with banner, thunderbolt, goad and lotus, they walked in the forest; did the thorns not pierce them? We always worship these two lotus feet of Rāma, the lord of Ramā.

Your tree of the world has an unmanifest root without beginning; the four Vedas and the Āgamas are its bark; six are its trunks, twenty-five its branches, and many are its leaves and thick flowers. Two kinds of fruit, bitter and sweet, hang on it, and a single creeper clings to it. It sprouts and flowers new each day: we bow to the tree of the world.
Explanation
The tree is the world, with Brahman unmanifest at its root. The six trunks, twenty-five branches and the two fruits and the single creeper follow the Sāṅkhya counting and are not worked out here.

Those who meditate on the Brahman that is unborn, without a second, and known only by experience, and beyond the mind: let them say what they know. We, Lord, always sing your good name with qualities. Ocean of mercy, home of virtue, this is the boon we ask: leaving every fault of mind, speech and deed, may we love your feet.
