शुक
The spies bowed at Lakṣmaṇa's feet and set out, telling the tale of Rāma's virtues. Speaking of Rāma's fame, they came to Laṅkā and bowed their heads at Rāvaṇa's feet. Rāvaṇa laughed and asked, 'Tell me, Śuka, how are you yourself? Then give me news of Vibhīṣaṇa, whose death is very near. The fool gave up the kingdom of Laṅkā; he will be the luckless weevil in the barley. Then tell me of the bears and monkeys, who have come driven by hard fate. The sea, who guards their lives, has gone soft-hearted, poor thing. Tell me of the ascetics too, who have great fear of me in their hearts.' The dohā: 'Did you meet them? Or did they turn back hearing my fame? Why do you not tell me of the enemy army's strength? Your mind seems greatly amazed.'गुप्तचर लक्ष्मण के चरणों में सिर नवाकर चल पड़े, राम के गुणों की गाथा बखानते हुए। राम का यश कहते हुए वे लंका पहुँचे और रावण के चरणों में सिर नवाया। रावण ने हँसकर पूछा, शुक, अपनी कुशल क्यों नहीं कहते? फिर विभीषण की खबर कहो, जिसकी मौत बहुत पास आ गई है। उस मूर्ख ने लंका का राज छोड़ दिया; जब अनाज के साथ घुन की तरह पिसेगा तब अभागा होगा। फिर भालुओं और वानरों की सेना की बात कहो, जो कठोर काल की प्रेरणा से चली आई है। जिनके जीवन का रखवाला समुद्र बेचारा कोमल चित्त हो गया है। फिर तपस्वियों की बात भी बताओ, जिनके हृदय में मेरा बड़ा भय है। दोहे में रावण पूछता है कि क्या उनसे भेंट हुई, या वे मेरा सुयश सुनकर लौट गए? तुम शत्रु दल के तेज और बल की बात क्यों नहीं कहते? तुम्हारा मन बहुत चकित दिखता है।

उस मूर्ख ने लंका का राज छोड़ दिया। वह जौ के कीड़े की तरह अभागा होगा। फिर भालुओं और वानरों की सेना की बात कहो, जो कठोर काल की प्रेरणा से चली आई है।
