The spies openly praised Rāma's nature with great love, forgetting to hide. Then the monkeys knew them for the enemy's spies and brought them all bound to Sugrīva. Sugrīva said: 'Listen, monkeys, send the demons back with a limb broken.' Hearing this, the monkeys ran and bound them and took them round the camp. The monkeys began to beat them in many ways, and the spies cried out, but they were not let go. They cried: 'Whoever cuts off our nose and ears, it goes against the order of the lord of Kosala.' Lakṣmaṇa heard it, called them all near, and out of pity freed them laughing. 'Give this letter to Rāvaṇa. Read Lakṣmaṇa's words, killer of your family.'
