Rāvaṇa says that Sītā has insulted him and he will cut off her head with his sword unless she obeys quickly. Sītā answers that Rāma's arms are like a garland of dark lotuses or an elephant's trunk, and Rāvaṇa's arms must be one of these in her neck, or his sword. She calls on the sword to take away her pain, since the fire of parting from Rāma burns her. Hearing this, he runs to kill her, but Mandodarī's mother, a woman of wisdom, calms him with advice. He calls all the demonesses and tells them to frighten Sītā in many ways, and if she does not agree within a month, he will draw his sword and kill her. Rāvaṇa goes home, and the demonesses frighten Sītā in many hideous forms.रावण ने कहा, सीता, तूने मेरा अपमान किया है; मैं इस कठोर तलवार से तेरा सिर काट दूँगा, नहीं तो जल्दी मेरी बात मान ले, वरना तू जीवन से हाथ धो बैठेगी। सीता ने उत्तर दिया कि प्रभु की भुजाएँ नीलकमल की माला जैसी सुन्दर और हाथी की सूँड जैसी हैं; या तो वे भुजाएँ मेरे कण्ठ में पड़ेंगी, या तेरी भयंकर तलवार। हे चन्द्रहास, मेरे दुख का भार हर ले; रघुपति के विरह की आग मुझे जला रही है, तू शीतल और तेज़ धार बहाती है। यह सुनकर रावण फिर मारने दौड़ा, पर मयदानव की पुत्री मन्दोदरी ने नीति कहकर उसे समझाया। उसने सब राक्षसियों को बुलाकर कहा कि जाकर सीता को तरह-तरह से डराओ; यदि एक महीने में कहना न माने तो मैं तलवार खींचकर मार डालूँगा। रावण घर चला गया और यहाँ पिशाचिनियों का झुण्ड सीता को अनेक भयंकर रूप धरकर डराने लगा।
