Hanumān hides among the leaves of the tree, wondering what to do. Just then Rāvaṇa arrives with many women, richly dressed. He tries to persuade Sītā in many ways, with kind words, gifts, fear and division. He promises to make Mandodarī and all his queens her servants if she looks at him once. Sītā places a blade of grass between them and speaks, remembering her dear husband, the lord of Ayodhyā. She tells him that a glow-worm's light can never open a lotus. She says he does not know the sound of Raghubīra's arrow. Calling him a fool who stole her in her husband's absence, she says he is shameless.
