Śiva tells Umā that Rāma plays a human part, like Garuḍa playing with a crowd of snakes; a battle like this does not suit one at whose frown Death is eaten. The glory of Rāma's deeds will spread through the world, and people will cross the sea of life singing it. Hanumān wakes from his faint and looks for Sugrīva. Sugrīva, too, revives and feels as if dead and returned. He bites off Kumbhakarṇa's nose and ears and rises into the sky, but is caught by the foot and thrown down; he rises quickly and strikes him again. Going back to the Lord, he is praised. Kumbhakarṇa, with nose and ears cut, is ashamed and turns back, a frightening sight without ears or nose. मन में यह जानकर कि नाक-कान कट गए हैं, वह क्रोध करके लौटा, और उसके मन में ग्लानि हुई। बिना कान और नाक के वह स्वभाव से ही भयानक था, उसे देखकर वानर सेना में भय फैल गया।
Knowing in his heart that his nose and ears were cut, he turned back in anger, and shame came over him. Without ears or nose he was fearful by nature, and the monkey army was seized with fear at the sight.
