Chapter 67·Kumbhakarṇa tramples the host·Verses 1–
Kumbhakarṇa, hostile in the field, goes straight ahead like Death in anger. He seizes crores of monkeys and eats them, as locusts slip into a cave. He crushes crores in his body and grinds crores into the dust. Bears and monkeys come out again through his mouth, nose and ears. Mad with the war and pride, he seems to be swallowing the world. Warriors turn back and cannot be turned again; they neither see nor hear. Having scattered the monkey host, he is met by the night-rangers who rush up. Seeing his army in distress, Rāma tells Sugrīva and Vibhīṣaṇa to look after the army and his brother, while he himself will watch the enemy's strength.

Kumbhakarṇa, hostile in the battle, went straight at them, like Death in anger. He caught crores upon crores of monkeys and ate them, as locusts go into a mountain cave.

He crushed crores against his body, and rubbed crores into the dust of the ground. Through his mouth, nose and ears the bears and monkeys came out in crowds and fled.

Drunk with the war, the proud night-ranger seemed as though he would swallow the whole world this way. The warriors turned back and could not be turned again; they could not see with their eyes, and did not hear when called.

Kumbhakarṇa scattered the monkey host. Hearing of it, the night-rangers rushed up in bands. Seeing his army in distress, and the enemy's forces coming in many ways, Rāma was moved.
