Chapter Five · Camp across the sea · Verses 1–

Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa smile at the sight and cross with the army. On the far shore Rāma makes camp and lets the monkeys eat. Every tree bears fruit out of season for Rāma. The monkeys eat and hurl hilltops toward Laṅkā. Any demon they find they surround and make dance, cut off their noses and ears, and send them back with Rāma's name. Those so marked tell Rāvaṇa all. Hearing of the bridge, he rises in alarm. The dohā lists the many names of the sea, as Rāvaṇa says he cannot believe it.

Seeing this sport, the two brothers smiled and went on, and the Lord of mercy crossed with the army. No one can say how great the crowd of monkey chiefs was.

The Lord camped on the far shore and gave leave to all the monkeys: 'Go and eat the sweet fruit and roots.' Hearing this, the bears and monkeys ran off in every direction.

For Rāma's sake every tree bore fruit, giving up the order of seasons, in season or out. The monkeys ate the sweet fruit, shook the trees, and hurled hilltops toward Laṅkā.

'Bound! The ocean of waters, the sea, the lord of rivers, the home of water, the salt sea, the deep — it is true that all those names are shaking in fear?'

Explanation

The nine names of the sea are piled up to show Rāvaṇa's alarm and disbelief.
