Rāvaṇa thinks of his weakness, hides his fear with a laugh and goes home. Mandodarī hears that Rāma has come and that the sea was bound as if in play. She takes her husband's hand, brings him inside, bows, and spreads the end of her sari before him. She asks him to give up his anger and listen. A quarrel should be with someone you can beat. Between Rāma and him is the gap between a glow-worm and the sun. Rāma killed Madhu and Kaiṭabha and the Daityas, and bound Bali. This same Lord has now come to lift the burden of the earth. She begs him not to oppose Rāma, in whose hand lie time, deeds and every soul, and to give back Sītā, give the kingdom to his son, go to the forest and worship Rāma.रावण अपनी कमज़ोरी सोचकर भय छिपाते हुए हँसकर घर चला जाता है। मंदोदरी सुनती है कि प्रभु आ गए और समुद्र खेल-खेल में बँध गया। वह पति का हाथ पकड़कर उसे भवन में लाती है, चरणों में सिर नवाकर आँचल फैलाती है और कहती है कि क्रोध छोड़कर बात सुनिए। बैर उसी से कीजिए जिसे बुद्धि और बल से जीता जा सके। आपमें और रघुपति में उतना ही अन्तर है जितना जुगनू और सूर्य में। जिन्होंने मधु-कैटभ और दैत्यों को मारा और बलि को बाँधा, वही पृथ्वी का भार हरने अवतरे हैं। वह कहती है कि जिनके हाथ में काल, कर्म और जीव हैं, उनसे विरोध न कीजिए; जानकी लौटा दीजिए, पुत्र को राज्य देकर वन जाइए और राम को भजिए।

नाथ, बैर उसी से कीजिए जिसे बुद्धि और बल से जीता जा सके। आपमें और रघुपति में कितना अन्तर है? उतना ही जितना तुच्छ जुगनू और सूर्य में।
Lord, quarrel only with the one you can defeat by your wit and strength. How are you and Raghupati different? As different as a worthless glow-worm from the sun.
