Chapter 34·The foot that would not move·Verses 1–
Aṅgada says he could break Rāvaṇa's teeth, but Raghunāyaka has not given him leave. Such anger rises that he could break his ten mouths and sink Laṅkā in the sea. Laṅkā is like a fig, with Rāvaṇa and his people the insects inside. Rāvaṇa smiles and calls him a liar. Angry, Aṅgada plants his foot in the middle of the court and says that if Rāvaṇa's men can move it, Rāma will go back and he will give up Sītā. Indrajit and many others rush at it, but none can shift it, and they sit down with bowed heads. A foot that cannot be shifted is like a saint's mind, which no obstacle moves from policy.

'I am able to break your teeth, but Raghunāyaka has not given me leave. I feel such anger that I could break all ten of your mouths, and seize Laṅkā and drown it in the sea.

Your Laṅkā is like a fig, and you live in the middle of it like fearless insects. I am a monkey and I would not be slow in eating the fruit, but generous Rāma has not given me leave.'

Hearing this clever speech, Rāvaṇa smiled. 'The fool has learned much lying. Vālī never boasted like this. You have become a liar from keeping company with ascetics.'

'It is true, I am a liar, twenty-armed one, if I do not tear out your ten tongues.' Remembering Rāma's glory, the monkey grew angry and made a vow in the middle of the court, planting his foot.

'If you can move my foot, fool, Rāma will turn back, and I admit I have lost Sītā.' The ten-headed one said, 'Hear, brave warriors: seize his foot and throw the monkey down.'

Indrajit and other strong warriors rose gladly here and there. They rushed in with every kind of effort, but the foot would not move, and they bowed their heads and sat down.

Then they rose again and rushed, those foes of the gods, but the monkey's foot did not shift. Just as a man of bad discipline, Garuḍa's enemy, cannot pull up the tree of delusion.

Crores of warriors like Meghanāda rose gladly and rushed, but the monkey's foot did not move, and they sat down again with bowed heads.

The monkey's foot would not leave the earth, and the enemy's pride fled at the sight, as a saint's mind does not give up policy though crores of obstacles come.
