Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa go on and come near the mountain Ṛṣyamūka, where Sugrīva lives with his ministers. Sugrīva sees the two strong men coming and fears that Vālī has sent them. He sends Hanumān, in the form of a brahmin, to find out. Hanumān bows to them and asks who they are and why they walk the forest, wondering if they are gods or Nara and Nārāyaṇa or the Lord himself come as a man.राम और लक्ष्मण आगे चलकर ऋष्यमूक पर्वत के पास पहुँचते हैं, जहाँ सुग्रीव अपने मंत्रियों के साथ रहता है। सुग्रीव इन दो बलवान पुरुषों को आते देखकर डरता है कि कहीं बालि ने इन्हें भेजा हो। वह हनुमान को ब्राह्मण का रूप लेकर पता लगाने भेजता है। हनुमान प्रणाम करके पूछते हैं कि वे कौन हैं और वन में क्यों घूम रहे हैं, और सोचते हैं कि क्या वे देवता हैं, नर-नारायण हैं, या स्वयं भगवान मनुष्य बनकर आए हैं।

बहुत डरकर उसने कहा, 'हनुमान, सुनो। वे दोनों पुरुष बल और रूप के खज़ाने हैं। तुम ब्रह्मचारी का रूप धरकर जाओ और उन्हें देखो। उनके मन की बात जानकर मुझे इशारे से बता देना।
Very afraid, he said, 'Listen, Hanumān. Those two men are a treasure of strength and beauty. Take the form of a young brahmin and go and look at them. Find out what is in their hearts and tell me by a sign.

यदि बालि ने उन्हें भेजा है तो उनके मन में खोट है। तब मैं तुरन्त भाग जाऊँगा और यह पर्वत छोड़ दूँगा।' हनुमान ने ब्राह्मण का रूप लिया और वहाँ गए। सिर झुकाकर उन्होंने इस प्रकार पूछा:
If Vālī has sent them, their hearts are foul. I will run away at once and leave this hill.' The monkey took a brahmin's form and went there. He bowed his head and asked:

४4को तुम्ह स्यामल गौर सरीरा। छत्री रूप फिरहु बन बीरा ॥कठिन भूमि कोमल पद गामी। कवन हेतु बिचरहु बन स्वामी ॥

'आप कौन हैं, एक साँवले और एक गोरे शरीर वाले, क्षत्रियों के रूप में वन में घूमते हुए वीर? आपके पैर कोमल हैं और धरती कठोर। स्वामी, आप किस कारण वन में भटक रहे हैं?
'Who are you, one dark and one fair, walking the forest like warriors, heroes? Your feet are tender and the ground is hard. Lords, why do you wander in the forest?

५5मृदुल मनोहर सुंदर गाता। सहत दुसह बन आतप बाता ॥की तुम्ह तीनि देव महँ कोऊ। नर नारायन की तुम्ह दोऊ ॥

Your bodies are soft, lovely and graceful, yet you bear the harsh sun and wind of the forest. Are you two of the three gods? Or are you both Nara and Nārāyaṇa?

या आप संसार के कारण हैं, जो पार लगाते हैं, जन्म-मरण का बन्धन काटते हैं और धरती का भार उतारते हैं, सारे लोकों के स्वामी, जिन्होंने मनुष्य का अवतार लिया है?'
Or are you the cause of the world, who carries us across, breaks the cycle of birth and lifts the burden of the earth — the Lord of all the worlds, born as a man?'
