Chapter 234 · Sītā turns back · Verses 1–

One wise friend takes courage and says to Sītā, holding her hand, that she can meditate on Gaurī later; why not look at the princes now? Shyly Sītā opens her eyes and sees the two lions of the Raghus before her. Seeing Rāma's beauty from nail to crown, she remembers her father's vow, and her mind is troubled. Seeing Sītā not in her own control, the friends say fearfully that it is late and they will come again tomorrow at this time, and one smiles to herself. Hearing the hidden meaning, Sītā grows shy. Fearing her mother because of the delay, she takes courage, keeps Rāma in her heart, and turns back as one under her father's control, looking again and again at the deer, birds and trees as a pretext.
