Chapter Eleven · Pearls of poetry · Verses 1–

As a jewel, ruby or pearl looks fine on a king's crown or a young woman's body but not on a snake, a hill or an elephant's head, so a good poem is born in one place and shines in another. For devotion, Sarasvatī leaves Brahmā's hall and runs to the poet who remembers her. Without a bath in the lake of Rāma's story, the toil of a poet cannot be undone by any means; so poets and wise men, thinking this, sing the fame of Hari that removes the dirt of the age. Those who sing the praise of common men beat their heads and Sarasvatī repents. The heart is the sea, the mind the oyster, and the wise say Sarasvatī is the Svāti rain. If the rain falls with right thought, the verse becomes lovely pearls. The dohā says that when the pearls are pierced with skill and strung on the fine thread of Rāma's story, the good wear them in their pure hearts and their beauty and love grow.

A jewel, ruby or pearl has a fine beauty. On the head of a snake, a hill or an elephant it does not shine. On a king's crown or a young woman's body all of them take on more beauty.

Verse 2

So, the wise say, a fine poem is born in one place and shines in another. For the sake of devotion, Sarasvatī leaves Brahmā's hall and comes running when she is remembered.

Verse 3

The weariness of the mind cannot be taken away, by a million means, without bathing in the lake of Rāma's deeds. Poets and the learned, thinking this in their hearts, sing the fame of Hari, which removes the dirt of this dark age.

Verse 4

When common men are praised in song, Sarasvatī beats her head and repents. The wise say the heart is the sea, the mind is the oyster, and Sarasvatī the Svāti rain.

Explanation

In old belief, a drop of rain that falls on an oyster in the Svāti season becomes a pearl.

Pierced with skill and strung again on the fine thread of Rāma's deeds, the good wear them on their pure hearts, and then their beauty and love are great.
