The poet says that in his verse is the generous name of Raghupati, the essence of the Purāṇas and the Vedas, the home of good, the remover of ill, the name Śiva repeats with Umā. A poem by a fine poet that lacks Rāma's name has no beauty, as a fair woman has none without clothes. But the speech of a bad poet, marked with Rāma's name and fame, is honoured by the wise and heard with love, like bees that take the sweet. Though his poem has no rasa, Rāma's power shows in it, and he trusts that. Who has not gained greatness by good company? Even smoke loses its bitterness in the scent of aloes. His verse is rough but the matter good: the story of Rāma that does good to the world. The chhand says the story of Raghunātha does good and takes away the dirt of this age; his poem is crooked like the river's path, but its water is made holy by it; and with the Lord's fame the verse will please the good, like ash on Śiva's body that is lovely to remember and cleanses. The dohās say that even he who has no taste is loved by all who see Rāma's fame in it, as wood joined with Malaya sandal is honoured; and that the good drink the pure milk of a black cow, so the wise sing and hear the fame of Sītā and Rāma even in common speech.कवि कहता है कि उसकी रचना में रघुपति का उदार नाम है, जो पुराणों और वेदों का सार है, मंगल का घर, अमंगल का हरने वाला, जिसे उमा सहित शिव जपते हैं। श्रेष्ठ कवि की विचित्र रचना भी राम-नाम के बिना नहीं सोहती, जैसे चन्द्रमुखी स्त्री सब भाँति सजी हो फिर भी बिना वस्त्र के नहीं सोहती। पर बुरे कवि की सब गुणों से रहित वाणी भी राम के नाम और यश से अंकित जानकर बुद्धिमान आदर से कहते-सुनते हैं, भौंरों की तरह जो केवल रस लेते हैं। कविता में रस न भी हो, तो राम का प्रताप उसमें प्रकट है, और यही मेरे मन का भरोसा है। सुसंग से बड़ाई किसने नहीं पाई? धुआँ भी अगर की संगति से अपनी कड़वाहट छोड़कर सुगन्ध बसाता है। मेरी रचना भद्दी है, पर वस्तु भली कही गई है: राम की कथा, जो जग का मंगल करने वाली है। छन्द में कहा गया है कि रघुनाथ की कथा मंगल करने वाली और कलियुग का मल हरने वाली है; तुलसी की कविता की चाल टेढ़ी नदी जैसी है, पर उसका जल पवित्र है; और प्रभु के सुयश की संगति से सज्जनों के मन को भाएगी, जैसे शिव के अंग की श्मशान की भस्म स्मरण करने पर सुहावनी और पवित्र है। दोहे कहते हैं कि राम के यश की संगति से मेरी रचना सबको प्रिय लगेगी, जैसे चन्दन की संगति पाया लकड़ी भी वन्दनीय होता है; और काली गाय का दूध भी सफ़ेद और बहुत गुणकारी होता है, जिसे सब पीते हैं, वैसे ही सुजान ग्राम्य भाषा में भी सीता-राम का यश गाते-सुनते हैं।

श्रेष्ठ कवि की विचित्र रचना भी राम-नाम के बिना शोभा नहीं देती, जैसे चन्द्रमुखी स्त्री सब भाँति सँवारी हुई भी बिना वस्त्र के शोभा नहीं देती।
A strange poem by a fine poet does not shine without Rāma's name, as a fair and moon-faced woman, dressed in every way, does not shine without clothes.

बुरे कवि की सब गुणों से रहित वाणी भी राम के नाम और यश से अंकित जानकर बुद्धिमान लोग आदर से कहते-सुनते हैं। संत भौंरों की तरह केवल गुण ही ग्रहण करते हैं।
The words of a bad poet, with no virtue at all, if marked with Rāma's name and fame, the wise speak and hear with respect. The good, like bees, take only the good.

चाहे इसमें कविता का एक भी रस न हो, इसमें राम का प्रताप प्रकट है। यही भरोसा मेरे मन में आया है। अच्छी संगति से किसने बड़ाई नहीं पाई?
Though there is no taste of poetry in it, Rāma's power is plainly seen in it. That is the trust that came to my mind. Who has not gained greatness by good company?

धुआँ भी अपनी स्वाभाविक कड़वाहट छोड़कर अगर की संगति से सुगन्ध बसा लेता है। मेरी रचना भद्दी है, पर उसमें कही गई वस्तु अच्छी है। वह राम की कथा है, जो जग का कल्याण करती है।
Even smoke gives up its natural bitterness and takes on the scent of aloes. My verse is rough, but the thing it speaks of is good. It tells the story of Rāma, which does good to the world.

रघुनाथ की कथा मंगल करने वाली और कलियुग के पाप धोने वाली है। तुलसी की कविता की चाल टेढ़ी नदी की चाल जैसी है, पर प्रभु के सुयश से उसका जल पवित्र हो जाता है। प्रभु के सुयश की संगति से यह रचना सज्जनों के मन को भाएगी, जैसे शिव के अंग की श्मशान की भस्म स्मरण करने में सुहावनी और पवित्र है।
The story of Raghunātha does good and takes away the dirt of this dark age. The path of Tulasī's poem is crooked, like the path of a river, yet its water is made holy by the Lord's fame. Joined with the good name of the Lord, the verse will please the minds of the good, as the ash on Śiva's body from the burning ground is lovely and cleansing to remember.

काली गाय का दूध बहुत उजला और गुणकारी होता है, सब उसे पीते हैं। वैसे ही सुजान लोग ग्राम्य भाषा में भी सीता और राम का यश गाते-सुनते हैं।
The milk of the black cow is very pure and does much good, and all drink it. So the wise sing and hear the fame of Sītā and Rāma even in common speech.
