Chapter Nine·The laughter of the wicked·Verses 1–
The poet says the laughter of the wicked will do him good, as the crow calls the cuckoo harsh. Herons laugh at the swan, frogs at the cātaka, and the dirty at clean speech. Those who do not love poetry or Rāma's feet find this a joke. His speech is plain and his wit weak, so it is fit to be laughed at, and no one is to blame for it. Those who have no love for the Lord's feet find the story dull; those whose wit is not twisted and whose love is for Hari and Hara find the story of Raghuvara sweet. Knowing it is adorned with devotion to Rāma, the good will hear and praise it in good words. He is no poet, and not skilled in speech; he lacks every art and every learning. He lists the many kinds of letters, meanings, figures, metres and compositions, the shades of feeling and rasa, and the many virtues and faults of verse, and says he has not one skill of poetry, and writes this truthfully on blank paper. In the dohā: his verse lacks every merit, yet one is known to the world, and thinking of that, those of clear judgement will listen.

The laughter of the wicked will do me good. The crow calls the cuckoo harsh. The heron mocks the swan, the frog the cātaka, and the unclean and wicked laugh at clean talk.
Verse 2

Those who have no taste for poetry and no love for Rāma's feet, for them this is a happy joke. My verse is in a common tongue and my wit is simple. It is fit to be laughed at; whoever laughs is not at fault.
Verse 3

Those who have no good understanding of love for the Lord's feet find this story dull when they hear it. But for those whose love is at the feet of Hari and Hara, and whose mind is not given to wrong arguments, the story of Raghuvara is sweet.

Knowing it to be adorned with devotion to Rāma, the good will hear it and praise it in good words. I am no poet, and I am not skilled in speech. I lack every art and every kind of learning.
Verse 5
